Overview

The fact that Katrina Pomeroy had been murdered was in and of itself a newsworthy event. The fact that she had been murdered on Friday October 13th exactly eleven years after she'd been one of five teenagers to survive the Friday The 13th Massacre, made her passing worthy of notice by the national news agencies Jillian Hanford used to work for. When an old editor of Jillian's offered her the chance to write a human interest piece about Katrina's life and subsequent death, she jumped at the chance to re-launch her currently defunct career. Of course in order to make the sort of impact she was after, she'd not only need to write about Katrina's unusual life, but she'd need to answer the question of who was responsible for her death. She knew she'd need help so she decided to enlist the help of the five writers currently living at the writer's retreat on Gull Island. Jillian would soon discover a decade old secret covering a shocking truth that was better left unrevealed.

First Case is the first book in Kathi Daley Writers Retreat Southern Seashore Mysteries. I have read several books in two of Kathi’s other series (Zoe Donovan and Whales and Tails) and have really loved her storytelling abilities. This series is a little bit different than the previous mentioned series but is still well written with a strong female lead. Journalist Jillian Hanford is used to the face paced life of New York and working for a newspaper. Jillian has recently moved to Gull Island, SC to take over a run down resort for her brother after he suffered a stroke and is unable to return to work. Jillian however can not turn her back on journalism, when she is offered to write a freelance article on the death of Katrina Pomeroy she jumps at the chance. Katrina death is suspicious not only how it happens but when it happens. Katrina was one of the survivors of the Friday Thirteen Massacre that happened 11 years earlier; when 3 teenagers were found killed after they sought shelter on a seemly deserted island during a storm. Katrina is found death at bottom of the pier on the anniversary of the massacre. Can Jillian find out what really happened to Katrina… did she commit suicide or was it murder? Can Jillian help to solve the 11 year old cold case? This is a great start to a new series. I will definitely read more in this series. As I said before it is a well written cozy mystery with a strong female lead. I love how Jillian is a determine to get to the truth but has learned from past mistakes. She is not just about getting the article but she keeps in mind how what she writes will affect others. I would recommend this book to all cozy lover and/or Kathi Daley fans.

a great start to a new series FIRST CASE by Kathi Daley The First Writer's Retreat Mystery Moving to Gull Island after her brother's stroke Jill Hanford surrounds herself with writers of various genres as she transforms his resort into a writer's retreat. But when a suspicious death occurs, Jill puts her own journalistic abilities into action, taking on a freelance assignment to write a human interest story about the woman. For this is no random woman, rather one of the few survivors of the Friday the 13th Massacre that occurred 11 years previously. Aided by the writers at the retreat and a unique parrot named Blackbeard, Jill tries to uncover the truth of that tragedy and its relation, if there is one, to this latest death. When Jill starts to receive threats she has to wonder if some mysteries are better left unsolved. FIRST CASE is a great start to a new series! Daley provides us with an island of well developed intriguing characters. She also takes a stereotypical teen slasher film premise and turns it into a historical event, a mystery to be solved, and the possible motive behind a new crime. While many cozy mysteries involve cats and dogs, FIRST CASE takes a different approach to pets with the inclusion of a bird. Blackbeard is a parrot able to provide clues in a most unique manner. This first Writer's Retreat Mystery is a well developed story with heart. Daley brings life into her characters making me want to spend time with them and get to know them better. I enjoyed the dynamics between these people (and bird) and look forward to reading about their continued interactions. FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

Awesome New Series First Case is the debut novel in Kathi Daley’s A Writer’s Retreat Southern Mystery series and it’s an awesome and delightful read. Ms. Daley’s writing style flows smoothly and she provides great background information about the characters and town. The characters are well rounded and affable and the mystery well plotted. As with all her books, Ms. Daley has provided readers with a clean, fun read, caring and compassionate characters, and an intriguing mystery to try to solve. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading well-crafted cozy mysteries. Until recently, Jillian ‘Jill’ Hanford was a New York newspaper reporter but she recently experienced a professional setback so when her half-brother, Garrett Hanson, suffered a stroke and needed help with his resort on Gull Island, a small island off the South Carolina coast, she agreed to oversee scheduled renovations and decided to turn the resort into a writers’ retreat. Turning the resort into a writers’ retreat looks like a winner; she currently has five authors in residence and a waiting list that is filling up quickly. The authors currently residing at the resort are George Baxter (traditional whodunit mysteries), Clara Kline (fantasy and paranormal mysteries and self-proclaimed psychic), Alex Cole (science fiction), Victoria Vance (steamy romance and Jill’s best friend), and Brit Baxter (unpublished but wants to pursue her dream of writing). In addition to being a sounding board for each other, the group also works together to try to solve real life mysteries. When Katrina Pomeroy’s body is discovered at the foot of an old pier, it’s unknown how she died. Katrina was one of five survivors of the unsolved Friday the 13th Massacre, which occurred on Waverly Island exactly eleven years from the date of her death. Jill would like to write a human-interest story about Katrina’s life and include the identity of the person responsible for her death. Jackson ‘Jack’ Jones is a well-known author who recently moved to the island and fulfilled his lifelong dream of writing for a newspaper by purchasing the Gull Island News. Jack will be writing an article for his newspaper and he and Jill join forces to try to solve the mystery surrounding Katrina’s death, but in order to do that, they need to go back and try to figure out what happened eleven years ago. Deputy Rick Savage isn’t happy about Jill and Jack’s investigation but Jill convinces him they should all share information and he reluctantly agrees as long as everything they discuss is kept off the record. With the help of the retreat authors, Jack, and investigating clues provided by Garrett’s talkative parrot, Blackbeard, Jill uncovers shocking secrets.

This new series of Ms. Daley's is off to a great start. As with all her books, I love the characters, they are real and people that I would love to hang around with. The mystery was excellent while researching an old case of a massacre on Friday the 13th Jill wonders if it ties in with the recent murder/suicide that happened. The twists and turns in this story kept me guessing even with help from the clues Blackbeard the parrot dropped. I was totally surprised at the who, I didn't see it coming. I will definitely continue on with this series.

This is the debut novel in a new series from Kathi Daley. If you've been reading her TJ Jensen series, you'll recognize the setting of Gull Island (as well as some of the characters) from the most recent book in that series, Treasure In Paradise. And if you haven't read that series, you can still jump right into this series. While this is still a cozy series, I found it to be more intense and suspenseful than some of her others--which is a good thing as far as I'm concerned. The older unsolved murder mystery involving several dead teens (which took place on Friday the 13th) gets a lot of coverage, and the scene is described in harrowing detail (but still without being TOO gory or violent). The present day death of one of the survivors of that massacre has Jillian Hanford, our main character, trying to solve both cases and write a newspaper story that could get her back in the good graces of her former boss. She recruits the writers who are living at the resort she is managing for her half-brother, Garrett, as well as the editor of the Gull Island newspaper, to investigate with her. Garrett's parrot, Blackbeard, also plays a role in providing clues, as he did in the TJ Jensen story (I love him!) When we get a full confession about the older murder, I actually found myself feeling sorry for the person who confessed, which virtually never happens. And the twist involving the more current case was a TOTAL surprise. Highly recommend this to all cozy readers, and all lovers of southern mysteries.

First Case ( Writers Retreat Southern Seashore Mystery-Book 1 ) By: Kathi Daley First Case is book one in Writers Retreat Southern Seashore Mystery series. Daley weaves another start of a good series. First Case is somewhat different from her other cozy mysteries, but she grabbed me at the start and I was hooked. She gives good description of her characters and they are so real. I have not found any of her books that I have not liked. Former News Reported Jillian Harfort comes to Gull Island to help her brother with his resort, a writers retreat. Jillian gets involved in an eleven year unsolved case where a massacre happened on Friday the 13th and some teens were murdered. Now news has it that they found another body eleven years later on Friday the 13th. Can Jillian and her friend get to the bottom of these murders even after eleven years ? Is the latest murder tied in with these unsolved murders? There is one character that I really liked and it was blackbeard , the Parrot . He is a very special parrot . Should you listen to what he has to say? I know you will love this First Case of this new series as I have. I Cant wait for book two .

After being introduced to this resort and Blackbeard, the amazing parrot, in a TJ Jensen novel by Kathi Daley, I was excited for this new series. I am also sort of a writers' retreat geek and appreciate getting to know more about the way writers' minds work. This series shows much promise. Darker than some of Kathi Daley's other story lines, this mystery involves an unsolved multiple death incident from eleven years prior seemingly tied to a present day possible homicide. The main trouble is untangling all the conflicting clues and accounts from witnesses. The characters are developed but with enough shadow to provide doubt about who is telling the truth. Initially those involved were all teenagers, teeming with hormones and angst. Mature topics are touched upon, although not graphically. I am a fan of the setting and the secondary characters who play important roles in discovering leads. Clara is an especially intriguing character I am looking forward to learning more about. Besides the mystery aspect, this series also promises a good share of romantic elements. If this first novel is anything to go by, that romance will not move forward smoothly or quickly. As mentioned, the tone is darker than Kathi's other series, but the process of discovering clues, leads and even red herrings is equally as intriguing as her other series we enjoy. Overall, a very well crafted beginning to an interesting amateur sleuth/writer/reporter series. This is emotionally charged and the reader may find themselves thinking about choices made. While I enjoy jumping into a Kathi Daley mystery, this one was a quick read. I finished it in one sitting and am eager for the next book.
