The First Days (As the World Dies, Book One) by Rhiannon Frater

Rhiannon Frater's As the World Dies trilogy is an internet sensation. The first two books, The First Days and Fighting to Survive, have won the Dead Letter Award for Best Novel from Mail Order Zombie. The First Days was named one of the Best Zombie Books of the Decade by the Harrisburg Book Examiner. AmericanHorrorBlog calls Rhiannon Frater "a writer to watch."

The morning that the world ends, Katie is getting ready for court and housewife Jenni is taking care of her family. Less than two hours later, they are fleeing for their lives from a zombie horde.

Thrown together by circumstance, Jenni and Katie become a powerful zombie-killing partnership, mowing down zombies as they rescue Jenni's stepson, Jason, from an infected campground.

They find sanctuary in a tiny, roughly fortified Texas town. There Jenni and Katie find they are both attracted to Travis, leader of the survivors; and the refugees must slaughter people they know, who have returned in zombie form.

Fast-paced and exciting, filled with characters who grab your heart, The First Days: As the World Dies is the beginning of a frightening trilogy.

One of the better zombie books I've read. Great character development. Recommend it!

A super-fast moving story starting with two women, strangers, who end up together running from almost everyone else that has turned zombie. From two different walks of life, they struggle to stay alive together and help anyone they can. Highly emotionally charged and guaranteed to haunt your dreams!

If ever my faith was shaken on finding another amazing zombie book, THE FIRST DAYS has renewed it tenfold and I am definitely itching for another bloody good time in ye olde zombocalypse! At first, I imagined THE FIRST DAYS as something similar to ZOMBIELAND - a tragically scary Twinkie filled with hilarities for comic relief - but it is actually more DAWN OF THE DEAD where a zombified Bill Murray isn't necessary to make this unforgettable. Rhiannon Frater captured my attention from the very first line (see above) - and held me as a oh-so-willing captive throughout the entire book! I don't think I have ever gripped a book as crazily - or put my entire life on hold to solely devote all my time and energy to this book! The writing simply flows and never lets up on its intensity as the characters struggle to accept zombies as a new reality and figure out how to stay alive. I constantly marveled at how easily one scene melted into the next. I felt like I was watching a movie except obviously THE FIRST DAYS is very much all book! What makes THE FIRST DAYS memorable is the cast of characters who lucked out and somehow escaped the flesh-eating jaws of death. Jenni, Katie, the couple who holed up in the hunting store, and the city who used their construction project as a barricade all had stories to tell - and they all carved a place in my heart. Some were die-hard zombie fans who recognized what was happening and noted how these zombies were breaking all the rules establised by classic zombie movies. Others had a hard time with killing their bitten loved ones because they were in denial of the truth. I cannot imagine how hard it was for Ms. Frater to decide who lives and who must die because, in truth, not even the good guys are guaranteed a "get out of zombies" card forever. THE FIRST DAYS is the first in the As The World Dies trilogy - and I absolutely cannot wait for the rest of the series to release because this is definitely one to look out for! I am ecstatic that TOR snatched up this zombie gem up because I probably would not have discovered it otherwise!

I am a huge fan of the zombie genre, and I must say this is the best I have read in a long while. The characters are very likable and you cannot be sure who is "safe". Flew through the pages (though work the next day was hard, I kept doing the 1 more chapter than I will go to sleep until it was almost time to get up!!) and started on the next one. I highly recommend this series for all that like the genre.

This book is well written and fast paced. It is true to the zombie genre. A must read for zombie fans and likely a good read for non zombie fans as well.

I've read many zombie books, and this one so far has to be one of my top favs. The awesomeness starts at the very first page. It has action, romance, gore, and it even made me laugh a few times. Frater really connects you with these characters. I love Nerit and Ralph :-) I have yet to buy the second book in the series, but i am definitely excited to see what happens next.

I'm on a zombie kick ATM and this book was very entertaining! Well-written with great characters and lots of action. I could have done without so much of the plodding romance between some of the characters - that kind of took away from the overall premise of trying to survive the zombie attacks. I love the twist on a couple of the characters - you can tell the author has some friends in the GLBT community. It's nice to see them included in the end of the world as we know it, without being perched on a parade float. :)

Best Zombie Trilogy starter book ever in my opinion! All 3 are amazing! I've re-read them multiple times and wish there were more to devour.

I wasn’t really feeling this book. There is enough action, but the story is just sort of there, it doesn’t rise to a crescendo, or do anything to really draw you in. The telling just seems like a series of events rather than a good tale with twists and turns. The characters don’t do much evolving as they just seem to change on the stop of a dime, and I found them not that likable. I found the story rather plain and not that engaging.

Zombies…Who is not fascinated with the world of zombies? Especially the zombie apocalypse! The First Days by Rhiannon Frater is a must read for anyone who wants to survive a zombie apocalyse. This book (as does the entire trilogy) reminds me of a little show called “The Walking Dead”, only BETTER! Guts, gore, drama, suspense…this book has it all. Frater’s writing style is just indescribable. Vivid details, unforgettable characters, stellar story line…you can’t help but become totally absorbed and completely engrossed into this post-apocalyptic world that she has created. Among the characters in this first installment, there is something/someone that readers will relate to. Frater pours so much life, soul, and emotion into all of her characters that it is really difficult to pinpoint which character is your favorite. I found myself flip-lopping between who I would dub my favorite because they all had a really strong presence, and brought more depth and breathed life into the book. The writing style of Frater is so fantastic in that I was able to literally see the scenes unfold before my very eyes, like a movie come to life. I was so emotionally involved that my heart sped up at the right places, my heart broke at the most unforgettable scenes, and a smile found its way to my lips at the most sincere moments. The First Days is a fantastic first book to a fantastic trilogy that I wish I had started reading it a long, long time ago. Pick up your copy today, and see what you’ve been missing!

For all you nay sayers out there. Piss off,,,,:!!!! You wouldnt know a good read if it drew up and bit you in you ass. For all the nay sayers and insuulters putting the authors work down saying you have read better 6th grade work ( your stupid) your most likely the guy in the store ( gonna get eaten) or better yet (mr BMW guy) who is as ass, wont listen to anyone ( then gets eaten). I didnt find there was to much sex in the book( just finished the first one) I have read another author ( a guy) who has nothing but sex on his mind and every other page is filled with sex, sex, sex.( that series was a damn waste!!!! That isnt the case here !!! Andd yes women can be heroes too. Although take a housewife whos never shot a gun before and have her become a crack shot with a pistol at moving targets is kinda hard to swallow. But all in all This is NOT a waste of money. So far i have enjoyed the read. And look foward to reading the rest As for you naysayers I look foward to putting a bullet between ur eyes on the ZOMPOC

If you are looking for a book filled with zombies continually killing people this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that explores human emotion, more on the order of The Walking Dead, then you’ll enjoy this book. I won’t give a summary of the story as there are a number of reviews where this is already done. I will say that the storyline is unique and explores new ways of surviving in an apocalyptic world. What I liked about the book: 1) I like that someone finally understands that an urban area is not the best place to be in a Zombiepocalypse. I like that the main characters left a large city to find refuge in a more rural area. 2) I like the unique safe zone and how that zone was prepared. This is much different than what you typically see. 3) I like the way the story begins. It’s very surreal and that comes across as the author is describing the beginning of a journey. A journey that brings two women fighting for survival together. 4) I like the flow of the story. While there are zombie attacks and numerous instances where the survivors have to fight off the zombies, the description of these attacks doesn’t last for chapters, and chapters and chapters. Some authors drag these elements out way too long. 5) I like some of the characteristics that the characters display and I like the cultural aspects that are displayed by some of these characters. What I don’t like 1) Sometimes the writing doesn’t flow as well as it could. It’s almost like someone else is writing those parts. My guess is that either Rhiannon’s editor missed this section or insisted that she write something Rhiannon didn’t completely agree with or in a way that wasn’t true to the writers style. 2) The characters at time seem a little flat and one dimensional. However, since this is book one of a trilogy, I’m betting that their characteristics will be flushed out further as the story moves along. 3) Jenni! I hate her. She makes me ashamed to call myself a woman. But perhaps that’s what the author wanted me to feel towards Jenni. I reserve the right to change my view as the story progresses through the next two books. Overall I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading the next two. I think that Rhiannon has a good story line and that the complete book overall will be an enjoyable read. She isn’t Stephen King yet but how many of us are?

Texas housewife Jenni watches in shock as her abusive husband Lloyd eats their three years old child while their other child twelve year old Mikey is already turned into a zombie. As tiny fingers grab the bottom of the door to get Jenni, a driver shouts at the stunned woman to get into her car. Katie explains she was on her way to work when she was almost bitten. A zombie plague has humans reeling. As Katie hits and runs over the brainless beasts, both are elated to have a companion while driving through the horrific landscape and grieving for loved ones. The two women rescue Jenni's stepson Jason who was at a sleep away camp while fighting zombies. The trio obtains shelter at Ashley Oaks, a human encampment in which high fortifications are being constructed. The zombies are increasingly becoming more intelligent with their attacks increasingly sophisticated and strategic, which frightens the nervous residents although their charismatic leader Travis tries to keep them safe. Jenni and Katie make this urban horror fantasy fun to read as their bond is forged over the gruesome destruction of loved ones and their civilized world. Neither one is prepared to be alone. Although they differ in background, each proves to have the right stuff while covering each other's back. Filled with graveyard survivor humor, fans will enjoy this Z thriller that explores the implosion of Texas society mindful of On the Beach (by Nevil Shute), zombie style. Harriet Klausner
