Overview

Flutist Kevin Locke, a recognized authority on Native American culture and traditions, reaches back on this album to the old wax recordings made by ethnomusicologist Frances Densmore between 1911 and 1914. Densmore made it her mission to capture as much Native American music as possible, making more than 2,500 wax cylinders in all. Locke chose 14 recordings of Lakota Indian songs for THE FIRST FLUTE and interprets them afresh. He recorded his own vocals and Native American flute outdoors at the Standing Rock Reservation in the Dakotas -- the area where the originals could have been played for centuries -- and his tracks are all enveloped in the lively sounds of nature. The flute melodies are not echoed or amped up; Locke's real technique is apparent, and the music is charming, authentic, and respectful.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Kevin Locke's First Flute combines the sounds of nature and the music of Native Americans into a contemplative whole. Recorded at Sitting Bull's camp on the Standing Rock Reservation, the wind, water, and birds of the Dakotas provide a natural counterpoint to Locke's interpretations of the Lakota tribe's ancient melodies.
