Jackie Robinson believed that by excelling in whatever he did, he would show that African-Americans belonged next to -- not separate from -- white Americans. In the process, he paved the way for other African-Americans in professional sports, and made a place for himself in American history. Large format with dozens of pictures!

It wasn't the best book. It didn't have a whole lot of action, but I enjoyed learning about a real baseball player.
"First in the Field: Baseball Hero Jackie Robinson" is a book that focuses on the baseball great Jackie Robinson. It is about his childhood and about the discrimination he had to face becoming the first African-American baseball player to play for the Brooklyn Dodgers. This was an excellent book with beautiful photography. It was laid out in a informational way that would keep children interested. In the classroom I would have students right about a time when they had to overcome discrimination and how they did not give up. I might also have them draw pictures of a baseball field and players. We could also go out and play a little game of baseball.
