Overview

BIG MAN ON CAMPUS

Crime fiction readers know Quarry, the ruthless killer-for-hire, from Max Allan Collins’ acclaimed novels – most recently THE LAST QUARRY, which told the story of the assassin’s final assignment (and was the basis for the feature film The Last Lullaby).

But where did Quarry's story start?  For first time ever, the best-selling author ofROAD TO PERDITION takes us back to the beginning, revealing the never-before-told story of Quarry’s first job: infiltrating a college campus and eliminating a professor whose affair with one of his beautiful, young students is the least of his sins…

Sharp prose that weaves a great story line, intimate first-person narration that brings you into Quarry's head and heart, and a cast of memorable characters make this book a fast, violent, sexy, and highly entertaining crime story. Max Allan Collins is a master of his craft. Kudos to HARD CASE CRIME.

This sexually charged thriller, written in 2008 but set in 1970 as the prelude to Collins' Quarry series, reads like classic noir taken to the academic neighborhoods of Iowa City. Characters fulfill their crime novel archetypes well, giving the story a familiar feel while allowing for a few unexpected twists in the plot line. An enjoyable, sexy distraction, and a good introduction to the series as a whole.

This is a quick read. Althought it may not be appropriate for everyone as it has some graphic areas in the prose in both violence and sex, it is a very interesting study of the making of a contract killer. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. The cover looks more like a "romance" novel than the fast moving dark mystery that it really was.

My least favorite so far in the HCC series (I've read four). The character just isn't very likeable. It took about half the book before I really started to care about the main character and even then I couldn't really identify with him in any kind of likeable way. The book is also very short, under 200 actual pages. All in all not bad, but not one of my favorite HCC. He must have something however, because he has fi ve books under the HCC imprint.

Whose hobby is stamps . besides poorly done it is short and text page count under 150 pages as are the others. If you read the other series you would know he would not have made it as a pro for long pagecounter

Quarry's first assignment takes some interesting twists. A hired assassin who cares: who would have thought? Over all, pretty good book.
