First Sight by Danielle Steel

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Paris, L.A., and the world of ready to wear fashion provide rich backdrops for Danielle Steel’s deeply involving story of a gifted designer whose talent and drive have brought her everything—except the ability to erase her past and trust relationships.

FIRST SIGHT

New York. London. Milan. Paris. Fashion Week in all four cities. A month of endless interviews, parties, and unflagging work and attention to detail at the semiannual ready to wear fashion shows—the famous prêt-à-porter. At the center of the storm and avalanche of work is American Timmie O’Neill, whose renowned line, Timmie O, is the embodiment of casual chic, in fashion and for the home. She has created a business that inspires, fills, and consumes her life.

With an unerring instinct for what the next trend will be, an innate genius for business, tireless labor, and sheer fearlessness, starting from nothing, over two decades Timmie has built an international empire that has brought her enormous satisfaction and success. In a world where humility and compassion are all too rare, her humor, kindness, integrity, and creativity are inspirational. Yet as blessed as she feels by her success, Timmie harbors the private wounds of a devastating childhood and past tragedy. She is too smart, too experienced, and too hurt to want much in her personal life beyond a succession of convenient, very limited relationships. Always willing to take risks in business, she never risks her heart.

But despite her well-ordered and highly controlled world, it turns out that Timmie O’Neill is not immune to magic when it strikes. And it strikes in Paris during Paris Fashion Week, when an intriguing Frenchman comes into her life when she gets sick. At first, Timmie and Jean-Charles Vernier are only patient and physician. They become confidants and friends, corresponding at a safe distance between Paris and Los Angeles once she goes home. There is every reason why they must remain apart. But neither can deny their growing friendship and the electricity that sparks whenever they meet.

First Sight is as complex and compelling as modern life itself. Careers, families, histories, losses, duty, obligation, and fear of losing control and getting hurt. It is a tale of daring to take risks, and losing control just enough to have a life, when the opportunity presents itself. When two very different worlds and strong-willed people collide, everything changes in an instant, as they confront the age-old question of whether to lay oneself bare and risk intimacy—or not. Are they brave enough to face what comes next? And will they do it together or apart?

BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Danielle Steel's A Perfect Life.

I love Danielle Steel's writing but I am very disappointed with this book. It is so repetitious, that I actually began to feel insulted that Ms Steel would think I didn't get "it" the first five times she wrote it. Having been a devoted reader and fan of hers for yesars, I will continue to read Danielle Steel. Everyone deserves to have a break but I may not buy another book with blind faith as I have in the past. :(

First 60 pages were terrible and redundant - then the Dr. appears OK - Then you move on past the gigolo and the orphanage and then back to Paris and more redundancy. What part of of telling us once how wonderful she is we don't get. I have read most of Danielle Steel's books and and really enjoyed 75% of them. This one is not to my liking.

I have always been a Danielle Steele fan but now have lost interest. This book, as well as the last few were not up to par. Her books have always have very strong women and that seemed to be a theme in her writing. This time everything was just redundant, like we didn't get it the first time, so it was repeated again and again and again. I DO NOT Feel that Ms Steele is writing these books anymore and really she needs to get a much better ghost writer or whatever you call them

I kept thinking I had read this book before. Everything I thought was going to happen did in later chapters. It was boring, I did not even care for the characters, she repeated herself to the point of being annoying. I still keep hoping for the old DS but have decided to stop wasting my money and get her books from the library. Disappointed again with this one.

I have been a fan of Danielle Steel's writing ever since she started writing. In years past I couldn't wait for her next book to come out. I have read hard copies, listened to audio versions and am now struggling to get through "First Sight" on my Nook. For years now I have begun to see the growing repetition in her text, which for me is annoying. Let me read something once, maybe twice if new info is added to the text but never more than that. In fact I have drawn away from reading her books. But when I saw this one at the Nook Store I decided to try again, hoping that there had been a change in her style. Other friends and family members had talked about this repetition and were as turned away as I was. In fact several will not read her books anymore. And I am going to join them. "First Sight" has a good story line, but page after page has the same event/theme/concern/idea repeated 2-3-4-5-6-7 times in almost the same words on the same page. I have gotten to the point where I read the first time something appears and then skim through the pages until I notice a new event/theme/concern/idea and read that then skim again. It has taken the joy of reading away and I am only working to finish it because I had a rule that "you must finish what you started to read".

This could have been a very good story if told properly. I kept reading hoping the writer would come to the point eventually. Hard to believe that Danielle Steel  wrote such a boring book. i will never again buy one of her books without looking into the story more thoroughly. Certainly not up to her standards.

I am a fan of Daniel Steeles older novels. However this book I find very boring. She keeps repeating the same thing over and over. I am struggling to read this. Not worth the money...

I agree. I am very annoyed with ds repeating the same thing over and over again. I have noticed this theme in quite a few of her books lately. I also have started skimming through the text. That is not the way to read a book. I also hate the main character. She is constantly "oh woe is me". I don't know if ds is still writing these books. It seems she has a new book coming out every other month. She should take more time in between books so she canput more imagination into it. I used to be a big fan. I am disappointed.

I enjoyed this book very much. I work in the entertainment industry and have visited the city of Paris so this book was right up my alley. Thoroughly enjoyed the read and it prompted me to buy another Danielle Steel for my Nook!

Nice standard Danielle Steel book, where you definitely enjoy the story but the ending is obvious.

I am rating this 5 even though I haven't begun to read it yet because I had a couple other books to read first. There have only been two books she wrote that I haven't liked. The summary of this shows I will like it very much
