Overview

First Sighting

This album comes as quite a surprise from the accordion player in LAU. It's definitely not folk, but far more new music, walking a line that veers wildly between the avant-garde and rock & roll, with cut-ups, samples, screaming guitar, brass, and most everything but the kitchen sink. However, if that makes it sound over the top, it's anything but. The ten pieces are very controlled, ranging from the aptly titled "Repetition" to the neo-funk that underpins "Can't Use a Map" (although it's more funk in a Gang of Four style). It's a disc of constant surprises, and none the worse for it. "Rory" draws on samples of Rory McLeod as well as a George P.S. Peterson poem to create a light atmosphere that thunders into "PSP." There's plenty of electronic manipulation, and a sense of roughshod adventure about everything, but all assembled with taste and a strong sense of musicianship. It won't be to everyone's tastes, but get into it and it's something you'll play over and over again.
