Meet the Author

The International Thriller Writers is an honorary society of authors, both fiction and nonfiction, who write books broadly classified as "thrillers." This would include (but isn't limited to) such subjects as murder mystery, detective, suspense, horror, supernatural, action, espionage, true crime, war, adventure, and myriad similar subject areas.

ITW's mission is "To bestow recognition and promote the thriller genre at an innovative and superior level for and through our Active members; to provide opportunities for mentoring, education and collegiality among thriller authors and industry professionals; and to grant awards for excellence in the thriller genre."
One of the main purposes of the organization is to provide a way for successful, bestselling authors to help debut and midlist authors advance their careers. To that end, ITW has designed numerous, effective programs and events which promote debut and midlist writers and their work, sometimes in partnership with bestselling authors. In addition, ITW promotes literacy, gives money to worthy organizations, supports libraries, and advances the genre. Finally, it brings together almost a thousand writers, readers, publishers, editors and agents at its annual conference, ThrillerFest, as well as at CraftFest, a writing workshop program, and AgentFest, where aspiring authors can meet and pitch top literary agents.

I bought this because I am a huge (HUGE!!!) fan of Lee Child, (I've read every 'Reacher' book in the series). It is a collection of short stories, none of them more than 10-or-so pages, by authors belonging to the "International Thrill Writers" organization. Lee only pens one of the stories "The Bodyguard". Some of the stories are good, some not so good. All of them are quick, get-to-the-point reads that don't take a lot of time to build characters or explore any real plot line. What you get, basically, is an introduction to the writing styles of the various authors contained in the collection. A taste of many different flavors in the thrill writing genre. This works for you if you're looking to find new authors to invest in, which I am. There are several stories that motivated me to find other titles written by the same author. I gave it 3 stars not for the content, most of which is quite good, but because at 295 pages, the $12.95 price tag seemed somewhat excessive. It did, however, serve it's purpose of planting the seeds of intrigue that will lead me to purchase more books by some of the authors contained therein.

This twenty-five suspense thriller collection is an interesting way for readers to meet new writers while established authors have an opportunity to thank the audience and the publishing companies by providing entries to First Thrills. "The Dead Club" by Daniel James Palmer and Michael Palmer is the best bet as wagering on death mirrors real life gambling pools. Other strong entries include "The Thief" by Greg Hurwitz and Ken Bruen's "Wednesday's Child". None of the entries from the veterans or the rookies are bad, but few are excellent. Still fans will enjoy dining with Rip Gerber, Sean Michael Bailey and other newcomers and vets like Stephen Coonts, John Lescroart, Karin Slaughter and Heather Graham as each provides readers with plenty of chills and thrills. The stories in this book are all over the lace. ranging from the very good "On the Train" by Rebecca Cantrell to the absolutely disgusting Chloe by Marc Paoletti. It's hard to know which ones to skip, so I read them all, not to great satisfaction.

I'm not really a fan of short stories but I always buy the ones written by mystery writers so I can find authors whose books I haven't read. FIRST THRILLS is a collection of 25 short thriller or mystery stories written by different authors and introduced and edited by Lee Child. Some of the stories are really good; i.e., THE THIEF by Gregg Hurwitz, THE BODYGUARD by Lee Child and THE GATO CONUNDRUM by John Lescroart to name a few. Some are okay and others were pretty mediocre, which is typical of this type of compiled work. Since this volume had more good than bad stories, I think you'd enjoy FIRST THRILLS. Lynn Kimmerle

I'm an anthology lover (grew up reading Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine) and a big Jack Reacher fan. So, when I saw this collection edited by Lee Child, I was hooked. An anthology is like a buffet...some items are more tasty than others (depending on one's taste buds). Rip Gerber's story, Last Supper, is presented as a full course meal which is pretty clever. This collection is good, but I found another anthology I recently purchased much better. I suggest "The Game" edited by Sean Ellis. It has 11 stories and costs less (I have nook version). The stories are based on the classic, "The Most Dangerous Game". Try it!
