Overview

The Fisherman: A Novel by Larry Huntsperger

Few New Testament characters are as fascinating as Simon Barjona, the man called Peter-a reluctant disciple who changed the face of Christianity. For more than twenty-five years, author and pastor Larry Huntsperger has spent hundreds of hours studying New Testament documents in preparation for writing this fictional first-person account of the life of this enigmatic disciple.
The result is a novel that faithfully follows Scripture while offering a powerful, fresh narration of the story of one of Christianity's greatest men. In the fast-paced chapters of The Fisherman, readers will relive Peter's initial resistance to the pull he feels toward Jesus and his ministry. They'll walk with Peter alongside Jesus through the events of the Gospels and catch intimate glimpses of the disciples' personalities. They'll even "feel" the dust on the roads as familiar stories are transformed into original, spellbinding accounts from Peter's life.
This fascinating novel will help readers "to see the Master as a man. For, if we cannot see him correctly as man, we have no hope of understanding him correctly as our God."

I didn't know what I was purchasing when I first opened this book. But from page one to page 253 I have never been more immersed into a story as this. Larry Sperger takes the reader on a spiritual journey the likes of which one can only imagine. THE FISHERMAN places Jesus Christ on a level that everyone can relate to, to laugh with, to love. I can only offer up my humble thanks for this novel. As an aside comment, wouldn't it be fantastic to have someone read Rev. Sperger's novel as a one man act? How more effective it might be for someone to play the part of Peter. Something on the order of the current 'Thomas Jefferson.'

When I first picked up this book, I thought just maybe this would be an okay book just to pass the time. As I read the book, I did not want to put it down. For those of you who don't know much or anything about Peter, this book is for you. The story is written so you feel like you are there also with Jesus.

Sometimes I wince when someone asks me to read a novel based on a Biblical character. I winced when I was given this one. No more. You are going to love this book! Not only that, you are also going to read the Biblical accounts of Peter and the words of Peter in the Bible with fresh insight and depth. This is a case when a "sanctified imagination" has become a gift to Christians who love Peter and, even more, love the One he followed and worshiped.

I found this book to be truly inspiring for any Christian and anyone with curiousity about the faith. The Publisher's Weekly reviewer obviously wasn't reading it with any spirituality at all. I was moved to tears by the voice of humanity in Peter's journey to self-understanding and his eventual true spiritual conversion. I highly recommend this book.

As soon as I finish reading it, I will read it again. Gives wonderful insight on what a personal walk with Jesus is like or should be like. Thank you Larry Huntsperger for this wonderful story.
