Reviewed by Bruce Arrington for Readers' Favorite N.A. Cauldron’s Fishing For Turkey is a Thanksgiving themed book about a family coming together to enjoy a holiday dinner. But a tremendous storm comes along and washes everything and everyone away. Yet in the midst of these events, the family, led by the optimistic father, works together to bring the parts back and still enjoy the meal, although under more wet and wily circumstances. The book’s pages add humor to the silly events that are obviously fictional, so it transcends reality to a point. It’s cleverly written in rhyme, and provides a positive and fun message to the young reader: no matter the circumstances, you can make the best of any situation if you so choose. The watercolor and pencil art used brought the story to life and added to the fun adventure. The colors are bright and contrasting for good effect, and the pencil brings out the necessary details. At the end of the book are a couple of games that children would likely enjoy playing—at least in the paper version of Fishing For Turkey. N.A. Cauldron’s story takes the universal themes of family, fishing and natural disasters, and mixes them together under what could ordinarily be scary and/or disastrous circumstances for people. But the optimism of the father, spreading to the rest of the group, led the way in which they persevered and did so by choice. I enjoyed the humor, and the story is filled with imagination and wit. I heartily recommend this fun read for young children throughout the year, not just during the Thanksgiving holiday.
