Description: This is the eighth edition of an atlas as well as a comprehensive compilation of skin disorders encountered in the field of dermatology. The book is subdivided into color-coded sections that make it easy to use. The original publication appeared in 1983.
Purpose: The aim is to provide a comprehensive field guide to dermatology for any healthcare provider. These worthy objectives are admirably met.
Audience: According to the authors, the book is written for all physicians as well as other healthcare providers, including medical students, dermatology residents, internists, oncologists, and infectious disease specialists. It would be useful to anyone involved in patient care, including ancillary staff wishing to learn more about skin disorders.
Features: The book covers the entire field of clinical dermatology, including infections, oncologic disorders, and specific skin diseases. It has special chapters covering the acutely ill and hospitalized patient, skin signs of systemic diseases, conditions seen in the transplant patient, and disorders of the oral mucosa. There are several useful indexes on drug use in pregnancy, disorders seen with bioterrorism, and the differential diagnosis of pigmented lesions. What is best about the book is how concise it is without compromising on completeness. Over 900 high-quality illustrations add to the pedagogic value of the book. Moreover, a boxed summary with pertinent features is included for each disorder and a differential diagnosis is considered whenever possible.
Assessment: This is an excellent, concise review of dermatologic disorders. It is portable and easy to use during a busy day in the clinic. In the continually changing field of dermatology, the updated edition is justified. I gave my older copy to the nursing staff so they could read about skin disease while seeing patients, but I think I will keep the current copy for myself!
