Chapter One

In My Age

The most sumptuous things in life
Are the ones that scar your soul
Wrinkle your skin
And break your bones

No injections to postpone or protect
A carcass
A shell
A cold heart
And lifeless body

Each broken bone made me stronger

This life I have fulfilled

Poems on Love and Heartache

    Mirror Images

I'm not who you thought I was
I refuse to give up just because you knocked me
           down
    I'll get back up
I won't fret over a stupid cup of spilled milk
I don't have to answer to you
I don't care if you don't like what I say
I know for you, honesty is a hard noun to hear
Because it was never part of your vocabulary
Well your name is no longer in my phone book
    And when I turn away
You won't get a second look
I've packed up to get away
From your stupid reflection staring back at me.

    Director

    Sugary red watermelon plush lips
Glittering morning dew on your eyelids
Golden rays on cocoa-butter bronze skin
    And spun sugar, gossamer thin

Weaving across my black and white grain film
Your words typed out on a lil' screenplay still
Soda pop bubbles for your oxygen
Spider web veins to arteries until

Rubies glisten on your pomegranate tongue
My camera pans across your darkest shores
As you sing, dance, and bleed through drowning lungs
Fairy dust glitters in your open pores

But the sparkle in your eyes still depends
On the direction of my camera lens

    Gardening

    Sun and the cherry pit
    Seedless like a watermelon
    Vines in my gut
    But I'm
           Ready
           Willing
;            And able ...
So let the rains of your sad eyes
    Water my grape vines
    And the suns of your
    Half moon hips
    Warm my orange rinds
    With your loving
    My tree will grow
    And I'll have two cherries
    To pluck for you

    French Toast

    Cellophane skin
    And gossamer wings
    Sparkles like freckles
    Speckling your flesh

    All these things
    And glitter-dappled eyes
    Draw me to your
    Strawberry lips

    Hips concave
    And belly bare
    Rocking like shores
    In North Shore seas
    Bridging the gap
    Between our independent waves
    Drowning faster
    Unable to clutch the air

    Lips sprinkled with crystallized
    Sugar
    And tongue the taste of
    Cinnamon
    One quick gasp
    Only to begin again

    When our icing skin
    Is licked away
    And our sweet tooth
    Aches with cavity
    We'll wrap ourselves
    In cellophane
    And make French toast instead

    Spoonful of Sugar

    You've got a tasteful noose
    For my straining neck
    And silly string
    Pouring out of your nostrils
    As the blood trickles
    Out from under my cuticles

    You've got a plethora
    Of words
    For my curling lips
    To try to formulate
    While your chagrin body
    Attempts to penetrate

    The blood is flowing
    To my brains
    As we lie hanging
    From the rafters
    Upside down
    Losing oxygen and our laughter

    My blue and purple veins
    Swirl like intricately lined webs
    Of sticky silk
    And our comings
    Spill across the floorboards
Like our tea and spilled milk

    Passion Pit Oasis

    Just the two of us
    In Los Angeles
    On Saturday morning
    Howling into the desert
    Two suns on fire
    And we have never
    Been more alive
    Resurgence of the raw
    Musical notes
    That are poised
    To take over
    This dead weather culture
In our empire of the sun
    Living things
    Meet the storm of sound
    Tidal wave of renegade
    Bass notes
    Spattered off the wall

    Joyride

I'll let you take me for the ride, just for the thrill
As the leaves on the trees speed by with telephone cables
Intertwining with the sky; a pitch black ocean rolling with
    Silver star-tipped waves
A raucous motion howling with the wind

The road splays out with its regurgitation
    Of tar-choked black blood
And your kisses tremble like the tremors in the earth

I speak out of turn with the lightning
    That tears apart your chest
Not pausing in my fury for a moment's rest

Suddenly a hush, and the leaves on the trees settle in the still
    But the branches still shake
    From the ecstasy of you

    Opposites Attract

    You see the world in
    Monochromatic color
    Kaleidoscope rainbows
    And pixilated screens
    Are only fantasies
    In your wildest dreams

    You paint the world
    With stark white purity
    I splatter nosebleed stains
    You ride a tamed horse
And I am just a rogue
    You feel like fine silk
    I'm just charred and coarse

    You are static
    I am electric
    Tumbling
    A live wire
    Rummaging
To pulse and surge and find my ground

You live in black and white
    But dream with high velocity
    So I will show you
    Two-tones and tri-color wheels
    Until I shake your orbit
And your eyes grow wide like saucers
    Share my teacup of chamomile
    And I'll be your chameleon
    In your world of monochrome
    Let me be your Pygmalion

    Jack

    Jack be nimble
    Jack be quick
    Take my hand
    And save me quick
I'm tumbling faster down the hill
    And cannot catch my breath
    Save me once
    I beg you twice
Give me what I want tonight

    Beating Hearts

    The heart is elastic
    Expands and expands
    Until it
    Snaps like a rubber band
    At it's breaking
    Cleaved in half

The heart is a black hole
That can be filled, filled again
Even once its contents have been spilled
    The black hole heart
No one can see where all its pain goes ...

The heart is a percussion gun
    Spit-firing bullets at a mile a minute
At .45 caliber it strikes me breathless
That a human organ could pound like
          this

    Its melodic sonic assault
    Bullets ricocheting off chest
    Cavity walls
             E x p l o d i n g l i k e
             S t a r s

    In a cosmic supernova

    Moonbeams and Gamma Rays

    Your shooting stars
    Soar high into the galaxy
    But fade fast
    And then you leave
    Haley's Comet in my atmosphere
    But your moonbeams crash
    In the stratosphere
    No, you're not an astronaut
    Watching from space
The earth spinning on a tilt
    You're still not strong enough
    To swim my Milky Way
    So sorry this destination
    Wasn't part of destiny
    Volatile beams and gamma rays
    Shoot a stream
    Across this horizon line
    Planets lined up to gaze
    Upon the starry daze
    And your ozone haze
Hole in the heart you built
Acid rain falls down with guilt
    Another decade
And maybe I'll see you again
    But for now
    You're just an alien
    Battle fields across the universe
    I aim
But wait for your arrow first
    This spaceship's headed for
    Apocalypse
    Meteor hailstorms
    Every time we kiss

    August Heat

    The rind and orange peel
    Bitter in the blister sun
    While the whiskey pours
    And crackles
    Over the grit and gravel

    A flick of your wrist
And the beer on your breath
    Inhale and exhale
    On your
    Tobacco cigar

    Don't worry about the
    Browning grass
    Rustling
    And the weeds
The dirt is hard and dry
    And your hands
    Blistered and raw

But the grit in my eyes
And the cotton in my mouth
    Sever all the sour bile

    Under Your Fruit Tree

    This room devoid of light
    I selfishly succumb to
For under shades of paling gray
I watch the sweetest fruits turn sour

    The rotting cores of carcasses
    Fall heavily on the grave
Lay your lips to razor blades—honey suckle
        words.

Poisoned oleander perfumes a sweet aroma
    Encircling the limes and lemons
And the rotting flesh of your bitter tongue

    Do stay, my darling,
Under the fruits of your discord tree
    The worms writhe enticingly
    Through browning apples
    With their dying leaves

Sour grapes cling to thorny vines
Like beads of sweat to my opaque eyes
The soil here is from decay
    Roots digging in with agony

Watered lovingly with sins and schemes
    Warmed by a black sun
    And a sky
    Devoid of stars

    But under your fruit tree
    I selfishly succumb
For no other fruit could ever taste
    So sweet

    Poseidon

You placed your world in the palm of my hand
But I was too young to accept it
Mine was encased in a globe, an hourglass running out of sand
You already knew the ways of the world
    But I'd have rather stayed
Cuddled in my bed of fantasies
The lights were too bright at the end of your tunnels
So I shrunk back into my darkness
    Comforted by doubts and fears
And you didn't know what else to do with my tears
So you gathered them up and sent them out to salty seas
    Where they churned and stormed
    And here I now lay
    On my seaside jetty fantasy
    Singing siren's tunes
Watching the sun glint its beams
    On my seaweed tangled legs
Cast in an armor of scaled pearl and turquoise and sea foamy green

    Roads

I wish I had a road map to inside you
'Cause then I'd take the interstate to your heart
And maybe all those roads less traveled
Could become the beaten path that I had treaded

I wish I could stop and ask for directions
(But my pride gets in the way)
'Cause I'm lost at a fork in the road
And I don't know which side to take

The sign says make no U-Turn
And I passed my exit long ago
I wish I had kept to the speed limit
Instead of speeding my way on past you

    Hollywood Symphony

    This is a sweet symphony
For a man I used to know
The strings are arranged so perfectly
    With a fluttering heartbeat percussion
    To satisfy my mind

    If my snapping fingers
    Incite a stir
    A flutter of your eyelids
    Then maybe I would
    Have you back
    My one and only
    My darling

The world knows of my keen devotion
    And maybe the bartender
    Has a number 9 potion
For you see, I have a notion
That you should be here with me

If the plucking of these guitar strings
Could bring you back to me
I'd be a lucky girl, you see
    The stars in my eyes
    Would shine brighter than Hollywood's

    Picasso's streetlight lit café
    Would be our dining table
And James and Jean and Marilyn
    Would be our only friends

If my voice could run like cascading waterfalls
    Maybe you'd chase after me
    Like butterflies and fireflies
Tonight I'd let you catch me

We'd roam the streets of Hollywood
And sing along to a sweet symphony
If only I could kiss you
Maybe then you'd taste my symphony ...

I Want a House By the Sea

I have a flower garden where these particular items grow:
    Honeysuckle and lavender
    Marigolds.
And from time to time butterflies flit among them.
    (If I were still young
I'd say the faeries make their beds there.)
    I have an herb garden
Blooming with mint leaves and basil
    And don't forget the chamomile.
(If I still believed in magic, those
Herbs would be ingredients in all my potions.)
I have fig trees like pillars
On either side of a bench
    Overlooking a small fountain
I throw my loose change into.
(If I still believed in wishes
That wouldn't seem like such a waste.)
    Inside my mediocre home
    Is a bay window sill
    Lined with cacti
    And leaning bookshelves
    Stacked with many stories
    And all my poetry.
    There are ceramic bowls
    Of bright colors
    In my kitchen
    And Chinese teacups.
There is artwork hung on all the walls
    And a record player
    That decides to work
Only when it likes the song.
My bed has one too many pillows
And I think the carpet's stained.
My closet is filled with pretty things
And I think the carpet's stained.
My closet is filled with pretty things
    My vanity,
    Lined with just the same.
But my little house is not a home
    Without you,
    The sea.

    Michelangelo

    Electric Michelangelo
That glinting needle in your hand
    Scrawl across my body
    Everything I am ...

The wars that wracked my body,
I'll let you draw on the flag
That proves this land is mine and no one else has entry in.

All the sorrows of my bleeding heart,
You can pull those hunter's bows
Until the arrows that they aim at me
No longer find me to slay.

Well you can pierce this land mass full of flesh
Until you color in the scars,
And only I will ever know
    Where the mines went off.

Let your colors flood my veins
Like fireworks bursting in the night,
And the only thing they'll see in the darkness
Is the color of my eyes.

    Spider

    Weave your trap
    To catch your prey
    Weave a web of lies
    And your lover may stay
    Sting him with your
    Poison touch
    Wrap him in your
    Silken clutch
    Rain comes down
    Your woven web
    Down came the spider
    With her
    Needle and thread

    Muse

    Hey, Renaissance woman
    Cool coursing through her veins
    Back to claim her crown

    She is a cherry bomb
    A locked-in elixir
    For her front man.

    Traffic and dust
Are the stylings of these streets
    Another fifteen minutes
And you can take your bow

    The Beautiful and Damned

    The beautiful and damned
    Lie in wait
    To deceive you
    Beauty a reflection
    Of your wants
    Needs fulfilled by sins
    You're too ashamed
    To name
    The damned growl
    In hunger
    Tantalizing you
    With the fruits
    Like Persephone in Hades
    They stand as two pillars
    In a circle of hell
Dante was afraid to speak of
    The beautiful
    Catch his wandering eye
    And the damned
    Howl at his feet
    Ensnare him with their teeth
Wet with the bitter taste of deceit
"Hope lies to mortals and most believe her
But man's deceiver was never mine ..."
    Echoes of triumph fade fast
For beauty often does not last
    In this circle of hell
    They've claimed as their paradise
    The beautiful and damned

Excerpt from "Cheat and Charmer" written by A.E. Housman

    Cabaret Music

    Your cabaret singers
    Sell sex for their liquor
    While I go home
    Sober and cold
    They sing terrible songs
    Of perdition
    Giving rise
    To many new suspicions
    The same old notes
    And cigarette smoke
    Cloud my eyes
    And dry my
    Frothing mouth
    And like a dog
    I sit and I wait
    To lap up
    All your lies
    Her name
    Might escape me
    But I caught her
    Flesh
    As she danced
    In your lap
    And you
    Sighed
    And your need
    For pleasure
    Only
    Persists
    As I sink
    Into these
    Dank
    Stale
    Sheets
    To hold you closer
    Than a
    Cabaret
    Kiss

    Kiwi

Your callused fist pulverizes her pulp
And your tongue laps up her lime green bloodstream
Mixed with rum you take her in with one gulp
And impregnate her with a tart salt green

She sheds brown sugar skin and feather fur
Meets your naked flesh with artichoke heart
Stains your skin with India ink, toes curl
Within a compost pile. Tears apart

Midnight seeds, explodes in your cherry mouth
    Alcoholic rush excites your liver
And veins and capillaries spark about
Juice down your chin and upper lip quivers

    A liquored sangria kiwi medley
But her kiwi lips are poison, deadly

    Black Widow

She's got you wrapped around her little finger
Every time she calls, you run to meet her
    I feel I can't compete
In this competition, I've claimed defeat
    I'm running races
Trying to keep up with her pace
But every time I see you, I see her pretty face
I've had just about all that I can take
I try to put on a smile but it's an emotion I can't fake
Who is the victim in this murderous game?
Who becomes the bait when the lion can't be tamed?
Who's gonna fall from their state of grace?
I thought I'd already won this chase
But she's the magician, and you're under her spell
You're the spider and you've woven her web
And you're entangled in her lies again

    Lit Little Candles

I'm ceaselessly amazed by the flickering tongues
    Of flickering candles
As they lap up their pool of indecency

Leaving their charcoal carbon dust fingerprint
    On the bedside table
    Overexposure
    Cast on shadowed walls
    Of sheetrock and asbestos

    They're wicked ones
    With the sweetest smell
    To titillate your senses
    A savory aroma
    And your own tongue
Wants to lap up what they serve

Indecent prints left on a bedside table
    Mark their territory

    Their flames entice
    And their wicks caress
Until your wax drips all over my floor
