Utterly stupid, even for a children's book. Basically this is a taxonomy of a bunch of random creatures, ostensibly funny ones, but you'll only find it amusing if you find descriptions of the creature like "Blunging" ("Hamble-springs around happily caring for its young. It's not so happy when it has to watch the adult Mernimbler rip its baby's head off.") amusing. It relies too much on the theory that you'll get a laugh out of nonsensical neologisms, and doesn't actually go the distance on actual humor. Not to mention the fact that there's no plot and no story, which would've been helpful. If you want to get your kid something in this vein, try something from Michael Whelan. Maybe they won't be rolling with laughter, but then again, they'll only be rolling with boredom if you get them this book.

All three of our kids love these books. They read through them over and over. They are really hilarious books, and I highly recommend getting them all - the sequel is as great as the first, and the pop up is great. This book has great possibilities for those who love to read in character voices and create sound effects. Challenging our kids to make them up too has lead to some great fun in our house. The books seem to tickle a funny bone in every age level that has sat and looked at them in our house.

I bought this book on a recent trip to the UK and it rocks! I believe it's already bestseller over there and I can see why. If you're familiar with 'The Office' (BBC show which won 2 Golden Globes) you already know Mr Gervais has a unique sense of humor but here it's combined with some stunning and hilarious illustrations to great effect. It's a kid's book but at 49 years old it had my sides splitting. I'd recommend it for kids and adults alike.
