"You must go to the dragon. You must leave tonight."

Before she even hears the words, Kaeldra already knows she must find the mother dragon whose draclings have just hatched and get some of the precious milk in order to save her foster sister’s life. Since Kaeldra can communicate with dragons, she is the only one who can accomplish the task. And so she begins a journey that will entwine her fate with that of three little draclings and one would-be dragonslayer—a journey that will become a struggle for life.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-An imaginary kingdom resembling Scandinavia during the Dark Ages is troubled by dragons, and spirited Kara, the heroine of this prequel to the author's Dragon's Milk (Atheneum, 1989), finds herself unwillingly enmeshed in her sovereign's plot to exterminate the creatures. Kara, marked as an outsider by her green eyes and her ability to communicate telepathically, uses this talent to call a dragon into range of the king's archers. Striken with guilt and grief when it is killed, Kara refuses to call the others. To escape her king's wrath, she flees into snowbound mountains, where she joins forces with a ``kyn'' or family of dragons, and conceives a plan to help them find refuge far from humankind. Kazan, a handsome foreigner, remains steadfastly devoted to Kara throughout. But her most engaging companion is Skava, the gyrfalcon she trains with the help of the royal falconer. The details of falconry, vividly described, add interest to the book. Fletcher's dragons are intelligent, if volatile, creatures of Earth, without the mythic resonance endowed them by Yep, McKinley, or LeGuin. Though characters and plot are a bit predictable, the writing is smooth, and the action fast paced. Buy for readers who enjoyed the earlier book, or for devotees of the growing number of dragon romances.- Margaret A. Chang, North Adams State College, MA

Susan Fletcher has written a very beautiful and interesting novel. Inside the two covers there is a world of enchantment. There is dragons, kings, queens, enemies, and curiosity. It is a story of a young women, Kara, who has an unbreakable bond with birds and dragons. She was saved by a dragon and nursed back to health when she was near death. When her parents left her for dead in a cave, it was a dragon who saved her. Kara also has a great talent, she can call down winged things from the sky and also later she learns she can TALK to them! When Kara is summoned from her house to help the king slay dragons, will she be able to cross the animal that saved her from death? Well, I recommend this book to readers who like fantasies and far off places. NOT to people who like reading the encyclopedia, or having the cold hard facts.

I loved this book so much! The story-line is genius, the dialogue is superb, it's well-written, it's romantic, and it's funny! It is on my favorite books list and is also on my sister's. There are very few series to top this one! Read it, all you people! Read it, all you fantasy lovers!
