Overview

Flight of the Renshai by Mickey Zucker Reichert

Returning to the Norse-inspired realm of Baern eighteen years after Children of Wrath, this first book in the thrilling Renshai saga introduces three warriors brothers....

Continuing the saga begun in the Renshai trilogy and the Renshai Chronicles, this story follows three sons of Kevral Tainharsdatter: Saviar Ra-khirsson, Subikahn Taesson, and Calistin Ra-khirrsson.

Bearn and her allies, including the Renshai, are faced with pirates, the vanguard of an army sent from a continent across the sea. Prejudice against the Renshai is growing rapidly, fueled by their ancient enemies in the Northlands. After a questionable battle, King Griff of Bearn is reluctantly forced to banish the Renshai from the Westlands.

Shunned by Westerners and hunted by Northmen, the Renshai will face many trials, while Saviar, Subikahn, and Calistin must each take his own stand in a world where there are no longer any safe havens for their people. Yet not only the Renshai are in dire straits: without their aid, Bearn may well fall to the “pirate” army fast approaching its shores....

King Griff of Bearn has no time to mourn the loss of his son Prince Arturo from a pirate assault as the menace on the Southern Sea has gown out of control. Likewise the Renshai who lost loved ones protecting the prince have no time to grieve as they are under assault too. The Northmen have persuaded many in Erthyame that the Renshai stole their land from them. Pressure mounts on King Griff to make reparations starting with exiling the Renshai from the Westlands to the Eastlands at a time he needs their warrior skills to complement his Erthyane Knights. As the Northmen mounts attacks abetted by the organized pirates and Giants on the retreating Renshai, the sons of heroic Kevral Tainharsdatter try to bring leadership to the trek, but Saviar and Calistin Ra-khirsson and Subikahn Taesson have personal demons and issues to overcome as well. This opening act of another Renshai chronicle is a terrific entry into the wonderful swashbuckling fantasy world of Mickey Zucker Reichert. The story line occurs about two decades after the last trilogy (see The Children of the Wrath)) ends and starst the next generation of heroes. Readers of the saga will fully relish the return to the Westlands and beyond as this is a fresh beginning to the third saga yet it contains all the sword and fantasy play fans expect. I found this book riveting with bigger than life characters that kept you engaged in the story line. I found myself staying up way too late in the night because I just couldn't put the book down.

** spoiler alert ** I was so excited when I saw this was coming out. I loved the Renshai Chronicles. I must have read them a hundred times now. I'm totally in love with Saviar, Subikhan, and Calistan! Although I'm very upset about how Kevral was killed off as a kind of side note! She was my favorite character!!! I named my newest Build-a-Bear after her though, although she probably wouldn't be very happy about pink teddy-bear being named Kevralyn...anyhoo, I hope there's going to be more to this newest additi...more I was so excited when I saw this was coming out. I always loved that these books had family, most fantasy doesn't really go there (I don't think), the whole pregnancies, moms and dads and that, (not sure if I explained that right), but I liked it. Also, I appreciate the Scandinavian flavor, being of that heritage myself. Aaah, now I want to go back and start at the begining again!!! Come out with more soon please!!
