Overview

Flirt by Booth Tarkington

Pulitzer Prize-winning author Booth Tarkington has an amazingly deft touch with characterization, and the tense relationship between town flirt Cora Madison and her quieter sister Laura is so compelling that the story has been the basis for a number of filmed versions. As with Tarkington's later novel The Magnificent Ambersons, The Flirt is a thoroughly entertaining portrait of a dysfunctional but ultimately loving family.

Quite a wonderful Edwardian-era story about an awful coquette and the lives that swirl and tumble about hers. The characters are both frustrating and endearing, the plot both aggravating and intriguing, and the reader is left to hope against hope that everything will turn out all right, even though a happy ending frequently seems impossible. Lots of scanning errors, so if you're not very good at deciphering odd characters and typos, and mentally filling in missing words, look for a better copy.
