Fly Away Home by Jennifer Weiner

Sometimes all you can do is fly away home . . .

When Sylvie Serfer met Richard Woodruff in law school, she had wild curls, wide hips, and lots of opinions. Decades later, Sylvie has remade herself as the ideal politician’s wife—her hair dyed and straightened, her hippie-chick wardrobe replaced by tailored knit suits. At fifty-seven, she ruefully acknowledges that her job is staying twenty pounds thinner than she was in her twenties and tending to her husband, the senator.

Lizzie, the Woodruffs’ younger daughter, is at twenty-four a recovering addict, whose mantra HALT (Hungry? Angry? Lonely? Tired?) helps her keep her life under control. Still, trouble always seems to find her. Her older sister, Diana, an emergency room physician, has everything Lizzie failed to achieve—a husband, a young son, the perfect home—and yet she’s trapped in a loveless marriage. With temptation waiting in one of the ER’s exam rooms, she finds herself craving more.

After Richard’s extramarital affair makes headlines, the three women are drawn into the painful glare of the national spotlight. Once the press conference is over, each is forced to reconsider her life, who she is and who she is meant to be.

Written with an irresistible blend of heartbreak and hilarity, Fly Away Home is an unforgettable story of a mother and two daughters who after a lifetime of distance finally learn to find refuge in one another.

Fly Away Home Jennifer Weiner Atria Books, July 13th,2010 ISBN: 978-0-7432-9427-0, 416 pg 4.5 Stars Fly away home is the beautifully written story of Sylvie, a politicians wife, and her two daughters Diana and Lizzie. In the wake and aftermath of scandal these three women are forced to face the truth about themselves including who they are, who they want to be and what they want out of life. The women deal with past issues as well as present. Weiner does a wonderful job of taking the serious issues of commitment, self-esteem, identity and choices and mixing them with comical moments. Meet the women of Fly Away Home: Sylvie: Wife of Senator Richard Woodruff. Sylvie has spent her life in her husbands service, helping him, guiding him and focusing on him. After his affair is brought into the open, Sylvie must re-evaluate who she is and who she wants to be. She must make the biggest decision of all. Will she be able to trust and forgive? Diana: The eldest daughter of Sylvie and Richard Woodruff. After watching her parents marriage, Diana has a very clear path for her life and how she wants it to be. While everything makes sense on paper, Diana forgets about the heart and love. When she is reminded her world is turned upside down and she must choose to love or not to love? Will she be happy? Lizzie: (Elizabeth) The youngest daughter of the Woodruff's and the family screw-up. Returning from rehab, Lizzie is determined to be better, to make something of herself, and to stay clean. It seems the world doesn't want to make this easier for her, and her family isn't in the best state to help. Will she be able to overcome of one the hardest parts of her life? Will she learn from the rehab and will she survive the shock and surprises she will encounter along the way? The novel is divided into three sections. Each section skillfully sets up the next and smoothly transitions into it. Each section is divided into chapters, entitled by the woman who narrates the chapter. The first section focuses on past memories as well as current happenings. The second section dives deeper into the issues of the women, each leading to the point of no return. The third and final section brings the three women together. They face the past, present and future together and discover where home truly is. Jennifer Weiner did a wonderful job with this novel. Fly away home quickly moved its way up the list of my favorite novels by Weiner. She encompasses so many relationships and focuses on them throughout the book. It is skillfully written and will make you laugh as well as feel the emotions of each character. You will find yourself relating to each character in your own way and rooting for them to find comfort and happiness. Fly Away Home is a heartbreaking, insightful novel, full of humor and interpersonal relationships. It will easily become a novel you will not want to put down, a novel that will carry you through many emotions, a novel you simply wont want to end. Reviewed for

The wife of a politician finds out that her husband has had an affair. She leaves to begin a new life. We get an inside view of the wife and family's vantage point, the ones who were betrayed and shamed in public. I love the biting sense of humor!

Infidelity is not new. However, the response and reaction to the circumstances is a bit tweaked in this novel. Being a loyal wife, mother and advisor is traditional teaching for women of a certain age or background....when it serves you well, it is grand, when is challenges you, the choices can be difficult. Here the choices are made in the best interests of the wife, the victim. While her character has been lost among the duties of marriage, motherhood and a successful husband, who is a public figure, she finds pieces of the old woman and slowly rebuilds her world, on her terms. Very well done, not too sappy. A real positive twist on an age old issue that is never easy to handle.

What a formulaic, predictable, ridiculous book. I would not recommend this to anyone, unless they are a fan of National Enquirer magazine. The characters are unlikable and fit so easily into cookie-cutter roles. You have the cheating senator who really loves his wife, he just couldn't help himself! He even has the nerve to say that his "aide", whom he slept with, reminded him of his wife. The wife who is humiliated, but still "stands by her man" in front of the cameras. The two daughters; one an overacheiving ER doctor who has no redeeming qualities and has hot sex with a med student while her wimpy husband is at home playing video games. And, of course, the recovering drug addict daughter who is sweet, but misunderstood, especially by her self. I only read as far as I did because I had nothing else to read. I finally did what I should have done from the start and closed the book for good. One of the most annoying things was how the author (or whoever wrote the first 50 pages) kept name-dropping and referring to sleazy congressman and jilted wives from real life. So contemporary! Ugh!

At some point in a woman's married lifetime regardless of the years invested up to that date she will look at her husband and wonder "what am I doing with this guy"? There a number of other questions that comes to mind as well like "can I do better than this" or the wonderful "seriously did I notice he did that when we were dating"? But it will come and then at that moment you have to decide do I stay or do I go and if I go where the heck am I going. Sylvie Server Woodruff did not come to this decision about her husband Richard on her own it was thrust at her the day his affair was public on every 24-hour news channel. He was a powerful Senator and Sylvie considered herself to be his partner is this quest to do right by the people of his state. She never saw herself as helpless but with the other woman's picture being thrown in her face the reality of the life she had chosen vs. the one she might have had or maybe could still have becomes a wakeup call and the alarm needed to be dealt with. The decisions that Sylvie makes after are not ones taken lightly but decisions have to be made for herself and even her grown daughters. Her oldest was a doctor, wife and mother while the youngest was a girl struggling to become a woman and no longer an addict. But as the story unfolds so much changes for all three of them as a direct result of Richard's decision to be unfaithful and not realize the consequences of his decisions. Sylvie was now in the what if stage of her life as well and thoughts of how things could have turned out if she had pursued her law career, if she had been home more with her daughters, if she gave everything to everyone and not enough to herself. We watch Sylvie grow away from what she sees the photo op her life had become to forge a future that makes it not a what if but a what is and what will be. Could she forgive Richard, can her daughters make their own way in life and when did it become wrong to put yourself first? Every woman deserves her own space to be her own identity and every woman needs a room of their own to breath their own air. New love, new life, old issues and past problems all merge together to make this a very good read and one that will answer allot of questions about why women stay with men that are unfaithful and some about why women leave those relationships. It also reveals that marriage is more than the sum of two people, it is the accumulation of the history of the relationship and the people who are all holding hands over the Thanksgiving table. am a huge fan of this author and was thrilled when her new book came out, until I started to read it. The entire book is slow moving, filled with large empty content, run on and on paragraphs with little to none character coversations. It was a book about cheating spouses and not much more...and the ending was horrible. Save yourself the time and money and do not waste either on this book

The wife of a Senator finds out that her husband has had an affair, thanks to the media. She leaves to begin a new life. The family of women are trying to adapt to the circumstances and trying to figure themselves out. This is a behind the scenes look, the after effects, how these events affect the lives of their family in crisis, and that's the story that Fly Away Home tells. The story is easy to relate to, as well as realistic. I recommend this to anyone who enjoys a true to life story full of biting sense of humor and a peek into the minds of all the characters.

"Fly Away Home" tells the story f two sisters, and their mother who are going through life difficulties. Cheating spouses, and drug addiction are the main contentes, however, accepting ones faults and misgivings are a part of it as well. While I do prefer her other stories to this one, it wasn't a complete waste of time. Check it out if you are a fan. But, DON'T pay big bucks for it! It is not worth $26.

I have been a huge fan of jennifer Weiner's for years! I have loved all of her books and always anxiously await the next. So I was very shocked when I was so badly disappointed in this one. First, The elitism is deplorable, I can't relate to rich, upity socialites and their govt spouses. The character of Sophie was to me someone who could not be sympathized with or related to. Second, Diana was a B...h! I loathe books that glorify people like her., she was self serving, cheating, self-centered and had no sense of humor at all. But the worst of all was Lizzie., as a person who works with and is related to addicts, Ms. Weiner had her personality all wrong...addicts are (whether recovering or not) lying, arrogant and manipulative. They are rarely the whiney little 4 years olds in adult clothing that Lizzie is supposed to be. To be fair, I listened to this book on CD (first time I did that) and maybe it was the way Judith Light portrayed the characters that made them unlikable. If so, my apologies to Jennifer Weiner...nuff said...I am still anxiously waiting for her next book!

I am a huge fan of Jennifer Weiner. I found this book out of her "norm," which isn't bad, but it wasn't as good as the others. I found myself not caring about certain characters and wanting more of others. Each chapter is a different character, which I do like, but I was more interested in Lizzie than her sister. I just didn't like the older sister. I wanted to know more about Sylvie's self discovery. I also would have liked to know more about the husband's journey. And learned more about the best friend. It was a good read and I didn't want to quit reading, just took me longer than usual because I didn't feel as drawn in as I usually do with her books.

AJAYI OLOLO is a very sincere person and a very nice person. i just had my reading and investigations done and it was the best reading i have ever had in my life. Although he didn’t accept to work on my case, i can say that this man is very very honest. because he could have took on my case knowing it wouldn’t work but instead he refused to work on my case. he said it was a waste of his time and my money. i was sad at first that he refused to help me but as i sit here typing this i realize he was right and that i need to move on with my life, because he said he hate lies and telling his customers what will not happen, that if my ex was for me he would have also gladly bring him back to me.It was my desperation that made me came to him because i wanted my ex back, after so many fake spell casters took my money, knowing that they can not grant results and can not help. AJAYI OLOLO was the only spell caster that looked into my case and called me on the phone to tell me that my ex has moved on that he can not be brought back with love spells, at this time i have spend $28 000 dollars over the past 1 year trying to get my ex back and it was for nothing because the other spell casters promised to get him back for me but never did and found out that they are fake and claiming to be spell casters. They just wasted my money and time, they will tell me to be patient that he was coming but he never did as all were lies and way to take more money from me. so i really have to thank and refer AJAYI OLOLO as to me the only truthful spell caster to the humans living on earth that needs his help because he told me the truth, he could have done the same thing the fake spell casters did to me by taking advantage of my desperation and start asking me for materials knowing it will turn out to be waste of time and money, but he didn’t. Instead he told me the candid truth that the best thing for now is to move on with my life. With this you have done AJAYI OLOLO, i will be your daughter and friend forever AJAYI OLOLO because this is the first time i have found a psychic, magician or a spell caster that is so honest and blunt. After being in relationship with my husband for nine years,he broke up with me, I did everything possible to bring him back but all was in vain, I wanted him back so much because of the love I have for him, I begged him with everything, I made promises but he refused. I explained my problem to someone online and she suggested that I should rather contact a spell caster that could help me cast a spell to bring him back but I am the type that never believed in spell, I had no choice than to try it, I mailed the spell caster, and he told me there was no problem that everything will be okay before seven days, that my ex will return to me before 7 days, he cast the spell and surprisingly on the fourth day, it was around 7pm. My man called me, I was so surprised, I answered the call and all he said was that he was so sorry for everything that happened, that he wanted me to return to him, that he loves me so much. I was so happy and went to him, that was how we started living together happily again. Since then, I have made promise that anybody I know that have a relationship problem, I would be of help to such person by referring him or her to the only real and powerful spell caster who helped me with my own problem and who is different from all the spell casters out there. Anybody could need the help of the spell caster, his email is ( tel.+254-7921-77506) you can email him if you need his assistance in your relationship or anything.he has a website too,

The story is good but am I the only one who noticed really stupid things like the kid, milo, has whole wheat pita for lunch with a gluten free brownie for dessert. Is the author trying to be "in" and/or "cool". That annoying. Little things but why eat "healthy whole wheat followed by a gluten free brownie. Stupid.

I really enjoyed reading this book. If I could change one thing about it, it would be the ending. I think she could have expounded on what happened to the characters. I almost feel like there could be a part two. The story overall was pretty great. I loved all the characters. Thoroughly enjoyed!

I totally enjoyed reading this book. It was so relevant to situations we hear about way too often these days, but don't usually get the insight in to what it is like for the family of a high profile person who falls from grace for an indiscretion. Each character had their own set of individual issues before being blindsided by this affair. The daughters each handled it in their own time, and fashion, and his wife who has basically lost her identity in his shadow, has a delightful reawakening that makes you both sympathize, and cheer for her strength. Loved it!
