PreS-Gr 1 This wordless picture book is sure to be more than most children can comprehend. Jake, a small boy, allows his bird to escape from its cage, and as Jake reaches out to catch it, he too can suddenly fly. The illustrations, done in muted chalk tones of yellow, brown, and mauve, exhibit the chaos and happiness that Jake causes when he is as free as a bird. Illustrations are abstract, with squared off heads and strangely lined backgrounds. Many appear in panels, with as many as 14 separate pictures in a double-page spread. Action is not always clear. Children may pick this book up, but they will quickly put it down because of the busy, confusing story and bizarre illustrations. Carol McMichael, Greenfield Public Library, Ind.
