I was happy enough reading through this, seeing as my dog's food brand was not coming up on any of the lists. IAMS. Then the  section on animal testing came up. I was horrified and sickened by what I read. Vivisection?! Great gods, what perverted purpose can this  serve? Well, my Bosco will not be eating IAMS anymore. Neither will his cousin Teddy.              And then there's the list of people food poisonous to dogs and cats. Would it be so very hard for vets to give a print-out of these foods to new patients' owners? I nearly killed my dogs, both of them, in pure ignorance. Grapes, walnuts? How could we have possibly known  without being told?               I only found out about the grapes because I was eating some at a wedding, and mentioned that my dogs loved them. A good friend of mine was also a guest, and overheard me- she's a small animal vet.  And so she informed me- grapes and dogs? BIG  no-no. I didn't know about the walnuts until I read this book.  My father was much bothered when I read the list out. Save chocolate, they were all things we had given our dogs, in some quantity or another,  more than once.             I had this book out of the library. I wanted to make sure it was useful and legit. Now I'm buying a copy. I feel like I should get several, and  give them to other local dog-owners- to pass around. No one deserves to lose a pet to food misconceptions or ignorance. The FDA  has got to get on top of this problem, they should be able to regulate this industry to the nth degree.

Ann Martin let you inside the UNREGULATED world of pet food manufacturers. She begins with her personal journey of the sickness and loss of her dog that was subsequently caused by additives in store bought pet food. She tells of her frustration in getting the manufacturers to explain what they are actually putting in pets foods under the euphemisms of 'meat-by-products' and 'milled grains' to name a few. Martin then contacts oversight agencies and the Veterinary societies and runs into further frustrations with them. This book shows you how to read your pet's food label and make the appropriate choice for your pets. You will see why on some cans why 'Not for human consumption' is on there. She ends her book with some recipes for those who wish to cook for their pets. She also lets you know there are some manufacturers who do provide good healthy food products for your pets. The bottom line is to read the label.
