About the Author

Edward Shafik, the son of an Egyptian pastor and church planter, is intimately familiar with Egyptian culture and the plight of the Copts in the midst of a hostile Muslim population. He has been writing poetry and short stories since his high school years in Alexandria, Egypt. During his college years, he won poetry competitions at the university level. He immigrated to the United stated after graduation from Alexandria University with a B.S. in chemistry and geology.

In the 1970s, he worked at Allied Chemical Corp in New Jersey while studying for his M.S. degree at Farleigh Dickinson University. After graduation, Mr. Shafik moved to Gallup, NM, to work as a supervisory chemist for Bureau of Indian Affairs. During this period, Mr. Shafik interacted with Navaho and Laguna native Indians living on the New Mexico reservations and wrote part of the Fog.

Later, Mr. Shafik worked in Richmond, KY, as the Chemical Lab Division Chief at Lexington Blue Grass Army Depot. The job involved the testing of nerve gas agent stockpile. At that time, he wrote a well-received satirical column for the local Richmond Newspaper. He also completed his first suspense novel, Fog.

Currently, Mr. Shafik is an active member in three different writing groups. He recently completed two suspense novels, Secret Places and Paradise Regained (inspired by real events surrounding a 2010 massacre of Coptic Christians in Nag Hammadi, Egypt).

Over the years, Mr. Shafik has followed Egypt’s politics and the persecution of its Copts. Coptic Assembly of America, a Human rights Internet site, asked him to translate news articles from Arabic to English on a weekly basis.

The hunt for Bin Laden and his death inspired the writing of Fools’ Paradise. The author addresses mankind’s long quest for eternity. The Bible describes uplifting Paradise with Jesus is the center of its light, holiness, and grace. The Koran describes a carnal paradise revolves around unlimited sex and wine, an alluring fantasy for deprived desert Bedouins.

Mr. Shafik plans to write several sequels to Fools’ Paradise as the characters respond to other recent events such as the Arab Spring.
