About the Author

Philip Hopman was born the youngest son of a tulip farmer. But he chose a career in children's books instead of tulips, and he has illustrated more than 150 books since 1988, including Earth to Stella (Clarion) and 22 Orphans (Kane/Miller). He lives in the Netherlands.

Hopman reveals the friendship that blossomed between two rising stars, Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn. Their individual stories of childhood aspirations and growing fame are shown in parallel: sketches of dresses and finished gowns run across the top of the pages, while Hepburn’s magazine covers and film shoots appear underneath. Eventually, the two met when “Audrey needed clothes for her next movie. But everything she tried was stupid. Too wide, too colorful, too fancy, too old-fashioned, or just plain ugly.” (Oddly, Hopman shows Hepburn dressed as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz and Maria in The Sound of Music during this sequence, among other roles she never played.) Biographical details are scant, but Hopman’s paintings ooze Parisian elegance, and a vertically oriented spread, splashed with pink, showcases Hepburn wearing her classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s dress.
