Overview

Finding his mate should have been Patrick Holland's greatest day, instead it turned into a nightmare with one phone call. His mate didn't want him. His heart broke, but at sixteen he was too young to do anything. The next ten years-ten long years- of Patrick's life are spent at odds with his mate. Split by forces he can't comprehend and a long line of misunderstandings, Patrick doubts he'll ever get the man he's both loved and hated.

Jake Richmond never expected to come home from Uni to find the youngest Holland brother was his mate. Knowing the news might uplift his still grieving father, Jake shares the news only to have his young mate threatened. Jake does the only thing he can think of, protect Patrick. The next ten years are nothing but torture for Jake as he watches his mate grow into a remarkable young man.

They say time heals all wounds, but how much time?

This one was just eh. The idea that Jake was naive enough to think he couldn't go to his alpha and best friend about the situation with Rick and his father was just...childish. If he was old enough and smart enough to be working on a masters degree in law, he should have known that the Hollands would have protected Rick from his crazy father. And if ten years of torturing his mate and himself wasn't bad enough, it only took a few words from a strange beta to make him say 'eff it' and claim his mate?! It wasn't terrible, but the plot was a bit over the top.

Forbidden Mate is book 4 in the Holland Brothers series and I must admit with the twist we discover in book 3, I wasn’t sure how the series would feel for me moving forward. But I have to say I was pleasantly surprised Patrick and Jake’s story is one that will definitely pull at your heart strings. Between the undeniable threat, the anger, frustration and their undying love these two will have you wishing all can be resolved and they will finally find their HEA.

I really enjoyed this book as well as the series. I have wanted to read this one since I read Unexpected mate, the first in the series. Toni put in a cool and unique twist when she made it so that male werewolves can become pregnant. I' ve never seen that before. I liked the background info given about how this is possible and how my questions from the other books were answered. One of my favorite kinds of romances is when friends become more. It gives you more depth to the relationship and a better foundation. There were a couple things that I would have changed, but in no way do they take away from the quality of the book. The first being the first few chapters. I'm not crazy about a book starting in the past and working its way to the present. A good prologue would have been fine in my opinion. The second is Liam. This makes me kind of sad because I know that she has The Atherton Pack Series coming out soon and I was looking forward to reading more of her werewolf books. Reading Liam in this book has kind of put me off wanting to read his story. He came off very smug and errogant, a know it all. Yes, he has this really cool gift but he is not their family, a friend or even a pack member. I don't think he should of put his nose in their business. Especially without knowing why they hadn't completed the bond, because in this case it was a BIG why. I also find it completely disrespectful to go after someone else's mate when you know they are mates. Even if they have not completed the bond. I think that Jake would have fixed the problem all on his own. I also would have liked to see Jake put Liam in his place and have Patrick applaud his doing so. Patrick should have taken his mates side. All in all another great read and maybe I'll give Liam another chance and read The Atherton Pack Series when it comes out.
