Five stars for Jennifer McMurrain’s Forever Quail Crossings. I read the first in the series and now the latest. A lot has changed at Quail Crossings after the depression and dust bowl. But the people are as resilient as ever. James is still alive, even though his health is failing, and Dovie is remarried to a man who loves her dearly. Then Nicholas shows up to “help” the farm. He came to Texas from New York where he’d lived with his mother and announced he was there to take over the running of the farm. Until the fire, it was unclear what his intentions really were. The characters are real and the writing is gut wrenching. Quail Crossings will live forever.
