Overview

Elminster in Myth Drannor by Ed Greenwood

It is the time of the great elven city of Cormanthor, when the Heartlands are home to barbarians, wicked dragons rule the skies, and the elven people trust no one. Wizards and warriors alike threaten their civilization in vain, arrogant, and ignorant quests for glory.

Thus it was that Elminster was guided to Cormanthor, the Towers of Song, where Eltargrim was Coronal. There he dwelt for twelve summers and more, studying with many mighty mages, learning to feel magic and know how it could be bent and directed to his will . . . . It is recorded that when the Mythal was laid, and Cormanthor became Myth Drannor, Elminster was among those who devised and spun that mighty magic.

About the Author

Ed Greenwood is the creator of the Forgotten Realms fantasy setting, an award-winning game designer, and a best-selling author whose fantasy novels have sold millions of copies worldwide in more than thirty languages.

Once hailed as "the Canadian author of the great American novel," Ed is a large, bearded, jolly librarian who lives in an old farmhouse crammed with over 80,000 books in the Ontario countryside, and is often mistaken for Santa Claus in disguise. Many gamers think he resembles Elminster, but Ed insists he did not model the Old Mage on himself.

Ed was elected to the Academy of Adventure Gaming Art & Design Hall of Fame in 2003 and has been a judge for the World Fantasy Awards. His most popular series include the Knights of Myth Drannor trilogy and the Elminster Saga published by Wizards of the Coast, the Band of Four series from Tor Books, and the Falconfar books from Solaris.

Ed Greenwood did it again !!! Another 100% most awesome story of Elminster the Sage or as I call him, an Archwizard. Elves and magic and Elminster, what more can I say. This is my 2nd time to read this book and even though it’s been over 10 years from my 1st reading, I enjoyed it just as much. A great read if you love a story with magic, elves, wizards, did I say elves, LOVE, good and evil, power hungry elves, and much much more. Read it, you will love it as much as Elminster loves his goddess of magic, Mystra !!!

Ed Greenwood is one of my favorite authors because he expertly blends drama together with humor. More than that, he takes the most fantastical characters and then makes them seem more human. Even the mighty elves of Myth Drannor have their human side, and here comes a human mage to challenge their prejudice against humanity. Hilarity and drama ensues.

I really liked this book as well the previous and the latter. However, I wished I could have seen more of elminster in action as opposed to 1/3 of the book being dedicated to his spritual journey and apprenticeship. It is as if you are waiting for this wizard to live up to what you would expect from someone who had a god powering him; instead it seems as if someone is always besting him in combat. Other then that, I really enjoy the character that is emlinster and hope to see more books with him in the future.

This is one of those books that once you start reading you cant put it down. I enjoyed the plot and the characters and I really like the way he describes the use of magic.

Elminster manifests all that I wish I were. His beek nose describes more of how I look, however, his commitment to do what is right; hearing what someone has to say before lashing out speaks to qualities I wish more people displayed nowadays. He is a humanist and reveres his deity who protects him. This book, with its inclusion of racism; greed, anger, stupidity, lust, learning, compassion, and love moved me positively in the most suprising of ways. I would highly recommend this to anyone who can understand that power comes from faith and courage.

This was the first Forgotten Realms I read and now I am hooked. I can't get enough about this wonderfully imaginative storyline and land. I recommend this book for anyone who is looking for something new to read.
