Overview

We were meant to be seductive. We were designed to lure humans in.

Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind.

Her brother disappeared two years ago, leaving her with no family or species to speak of. She hides among humans, spending her days working at a bar and her nights searching for him. The bleak pattern goes on and on... until she catches the eye of a powerful faerie.

He makes no attempt to hide that he desires Fortuna. And in exchange for her, he offers something irresistible. So Fortuna reluctantly leaves her safe existence behind to step back into a world of creatures and power.

It soon becomes clear that she may not have bargained with her heart, but her very life.

AHHHH I have so many burning questions! I can definitely say Fortuna Sworn will leave you wanting more in a wonderful (MADDENING) way. I really enjoyed Fortuna and her journey into the world of the Fae. She was a good leading lady, strong, smart, audacious and stubborn as all get out. My kinda gal! It's everyone else I'm so unsure of! Every time I thought I had one of them figured out I was thrown for a loop and the story went in another direction I wasn't expecting. The men in Fortuna's life are quite puzzling. I was hoping to get a little better of an understanding of at least a few of them by the end but alas I will have to wait until the next book. The pace is pretty consistently steady which makes for a quicker read. I thought the Fae politics were brilliant! The trials were very interesting but I did feel like the end of them was rather anticlimactic, which was surprising as they seemed to start of really strong. You'll find many familiar mythical beings in this one, and even a few unique ones! I liked that the author really made the familiar ones her own though. With some subtle and some larger tweaks. All in all an enchanting start to a magical tale. I'm looking forward to more...and really figuring out these mysterious men! I received an ARC of this book from the author and this is my honest review.

FORTUNA SWORN is the book I didn't know I wanted- but couldn't put down. This paranormal romance/fantasy follows Fortuna Sworn, a Nightmare. In a world where the descendants of fallen angels have supernatural powers, werewolves, vampires, and others exist- and are hunted for their abilities to become slaves or to be eaten/killed for the properties that consuming them can give. Nightmares are going extinct, and Fortuna may be the last one since her brother disappeared a couple years before. Fortuna has the ability to sense someone's fears and then to use them against them by creating nightmarish visions. The book begins right after Fortuna was captured by slave-trading goblins, and the plot gets thicker and more intense from there. She is soon to meet Collith, a fae who wants to marry her in exchange for the thing she wants most. As she travels with him to the Unseelie Court and continues her quest to gain what she desires most, her life is challenged, lines are drawn in the sand, and neither Fortuna nor the Unseelie Court will be the same. I was completely captivated by Fortuna and her story- just, all of it. The romance, the characters, the challenges, and the developments- it's all amazingly well done. I don't want to reveal too much to avoid spoilers, but this is a beautifully crafted world with a engrossing story and three-dimensional characters. The imperfections in these characters gives them their appeal, and I was there for it. The plot was reminiscent of a strong YA fantasy (strong female character, plenty of snark, clear journeys/quests), but it also has the adult elements with dark themes and sex scenes that add some romance as a secondary genre (I would classify as a romantic fantasy vs. fantasy romance). As such, it was perfect for me. I love the plot-driven YA and also enjoy adult paranormal romance, and this book hit that sweet spot so well. Overall, this was an incredible, lush romantic fantasy that had me turning pages constantly all the way to the end. I will definitely be seeking out the next book in this amazing series. I would highly recommend for anyone who loves Sarah J. Maas's COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES series, Donna Grant's paranormal romance series (DRAGON KINGS, REAPERS), and/or Victoria Aveyard's RED QUEEN series. You won't regret picking up this fantastic read! As a small note, I would add warnings for torture, murder, supernatural animal abuse, Stockholm Syndrome, slavery, and a bit of a cliffhanger ending (next book now, please!!). Please note that I received an ARC from the author. All opinions are my own.

This is a first read for me by this author. The blurb really intrigued me. This at first sort of had ACOTAR series vibe in the beginning. I loved the initial banter between the main couple. I wanted more of a background or initial introduction/buildup in the story. I have to say a good chunk of the middle part was a bit slow. I thought this going to be a standalone, but it turns out its book 1 in a unknown # in a series. I just can't pinpoint exactly why I'm feeling indifferent about this book. This was an ok first book for me. I received this book at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

This was a great read. Fortuna was a creature called a nightmare. Her power was to cause fear. She lost her brother and would do anything for him including marry the king of the unseelie court. She goes through hell and back only to realize that she has just begun to suffer. I can't wait til the next book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Fortuna Sworn is the last of her kind, what the Fae call a Nightmare. Her younger brother Damon disappeared two years ago and so when a strange Fae called Collith offers to take her to him, in exchange for her hand in marriage, she barely hesitates. But when Fortuna descends into the Unseelie Court she finds her 'husband' is not who she thought he was and her brother is the willing slave to a vicious Fae. her only hope to release Damon is with the help of her servant Laurie, her dream friend Oliver and some of the human and shifter slaves in the court. I enjoyed this, it sort of reminded me of Julie Kagawa's series the Iron Fey as Fortuna faces vicious, hostile Fae, but the three-way love/lust triangle (square?) between Fortuna, Collith, Oliver and Laurie doesn't bode well for future novels in the series. I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.

4.5 Stars! What an original an unique story! This was very, well written and really drew me in from the start. I like that as much world and character building there was, it never felt bogged down by details. The action starts immediately and really just kept going all the way to the end. I never really knew what direction it was going to take. I like that it was a surprise, but at times I wasn't sure I liked the circumstances. By the end of this book, I don't know how the heroine is going to be happy, which makes me wary. Fortuna is stuck in a world she doesn't want to be in. With a man, or I should say fairy, she doesn't want to be with, but I also can see where he will eventually be someone she does want. Or will she? I'm not even sure of that. Like I said, I have no idea where the author will take this but she has got me hooked. I need to know what happens in the next book. This is only the first book and does end on a cliffhanger.

4.5 ★ I absolutely adored this book. It had everything I love in a good book. Supernatural beings, snarky humor, romance, action and many surprises along the way. We deal with the Fae mostly but there are plenty of other supernatural groups as well. Overall I must say the world building was awesome, I loved their world mixed with ours. The author did a great job with world building, no info dumping but also not too slow or boring. I also enjoyed that some of the lore we know, does not apply in this world. Some do and others get a fresh spin on it. The overall pacing of the book was good as well, there were a few times it just sped up out of nowhere but overall it was steady and great. I loved Fortuna, she was strong, funny and still had a good head on her and made good decisions……. Most of the time. I liked that she stood her ground and did what she thought was best no matter what others said. She also accepted her faults and short comings and made it work. Collith, I really liked I also liked that he is somewhat of a mystery and we along with Fortuna have to figure him out. Laurie was one of my favorite characters and I’m dying to know more about him. Oliver, …. Hmmmm not sure to be honest, even at the end…….. Sometimes it just left me a bit confused. Overall. I really loved this book. Going in, I had no idea this is a new series and when I saw the ending I knew…… But man, what an ending it was. We get a major cliffhanger that keeps you begging for more and that I, myself did not see coming. If you like fantasy or even urban fantasy, I highly recommend this book I’m so glad I had a chance to read it and find a new series to look forward to. I give it 4.5 ★
