About the Author

Eric W. Stein earned a PhD in Managerial Science from the
Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a
BA in Physics from Amherst College. He is an Associate
Professor of Management Science and Information
Systems at The Pennsylvania State University where he focuses on creativity, innovation, and sustainability. He served as director of the Entrepreneurship program in the
MBA program, ran his own firm designing KM software,
and has been published in numerous journals. Dr. Stein has served as a consultant to several organizations including
Xerox, and the World Bank, A community leader, he was elected Councilman in Media, PA.

Stein is an unusual blend of scientist, artist, and technologist. Since diversity is at the heart of creative thought, he naturally brings a multi-faceted perspective to the topic. He offers extensive research on the various topics in the book and supplements it from his own personal experiences. Creativity combines inputs from different domains to come up with something new. Stein has synthesized information from five different knowledge domains to construct a new framework that enables individuals and groups to further develop their own creative abilities. One of the best chapters is on improvisation. This is a topic not typically found in business books, yet is definitely a competence necessary for success in the 21st century. We exist in an increasingly complex, uncertain, and ambiguous world. The ability to think-on-your-feet and rapidly respond in ways that make sense to others—whether the focus is on innovating, communicating, or leading—is very important. While reading this chapter, I paused any number of times to reflect upon the rich insights I could make use of in my work. The book has an extensive appendix for those who want to go beyond the content within each of the chapters. In particular, I found the annotations for each of the multimedia sources to be especially helpful in order to guide my further investigations.

Dr. Stein shares in this very readable book his findings from years of studying the most effective practices of highly creative people and organizations. His approach is built on the belief that all of us as human beings are born with an innate potential for creativity. He provides a four-step framework for developing our creative potential in ways that will empower us to meet the demands of modern organizations and their search for innovations solutions to contemporary challenges. This book takes a theoretical model for thinking about human creativity and turns it into practical applications of value to anyone interested in pursuing personal and professional growth.
