Found (Matt Royal Series #8) by H Terrell Griffin

The quiet of Longboat Key, Florida, is shattered when an old man is shot to death and his murderer is killed while fleeing the police. Strange documents in German and Arabic are found in the killer's car then an old friend of the murdered man disappears. The island's only detective, Jennifer Diane (J.D.) Duncan receives a text message with a picture taken that morning of a college friend whom she thought was dead. Matt Royal and J.D. are pursued by men who would do them harm, and Matt's best friend, Jock Algren, a shadowy operative of the U.S. government's most secretive intelligence agency comes to visit the island. As the mystery deepens, a ragtag group of devious and dangerous characters intrudes on the lives of the islanders, creating a kind of havoc unusual for a sun-splashed island full of retirees and beach bums. Matt, J.D., and Jock rush to find the answer to why one old man was killed and another disappeared, the meaning of the photo sent to J.D. of her almost surely dead college friend, and why somebody is trying to kill them.

The Matt Royal Series by author H. Terrell Griffin has been a consistently enjoyable read over the course of its seven novels. Griffin always injects his love of Florida and the people who live there through witty observations about the city and equally amusing characters. Over the course of the series, readers have grown attached to Matt Royal and his crime fighting band of friends. This, combined with short chapters and unique mysteries, have made the previous installments quick and engaging reads. The consistent excellence of the series thus far has left me with a decidedly mixed reaction to this latest installment. The eighth entry in the series contains many of the above mentioned elements that readers have come to expect. Unfortunately, the plot becomes so full, that it is difficult to keep each element of the story clear. The Matt Royal books have always required some suspension of disbelief, but Found pushes that idea to the limit. As the characters investigate murder, a missing person, secrets from a WWII submarine, police corruption, and a local mafia drug ring, the plot becomes convoluted and difficult to follow. A third of the way through, flashbacks to WWII are injected amidst the present day narrative, further diluting the focus of the novel. To be fair, the information that is given during these flashbacks is vital to understanding the conclusion, and Griffin does an excellent job making a satisfying end to all of the seemingly disparate plot points. Still, the journey to this resolution requires a good bit of patience. Plot issues aside, Griffin's deeply drawn characters help to keep the weary reader invested in the story. Matt Royal is a likable everyman who readers are sure to get behind. Griffin explores the relationship between Matt and his equally strong willed girlfriend J.D. as the two come to terms with the complexities of their commitment. Matt operates on a thin line between what is legally acceptable and morally just. This creates tension between him and his law obligated better half. Griffin writes of these issues with a skillful delicacy that brings a much needed reality to the outlandish world he has created. While this is not the strongest installment in the usually stellar series, Found gets enough right to successfully warrant any future Matt Royal novels.

4 stars I have read all 8 Matt Royal books and this one follows along with the others. Someone is trying to kill Matt or at least break some bones. He has no idea why anyone would come after him again. For a retired lawyer he sure racks up people who hate him. There is a lot of violence in a Matt Royal Mystery. Usually Matt and Jock are the ones taking out the bad guys. They are not the most law abiding two citizens. They sometimes merit out justice that is not legal. J.D. gets a text from a friend showing todays headlines. Katie was thought to have died a year ago with her husband. Killed in her own home. Her body was never found. The picture had writing on it that was a personal between them at collage. J.D. is the only detective in Longboat. She is busy so asks her honey Matt to help her look into Katie's murder. Matt is a retired lawyer. He retired young with a enough money to last if he is careful. He calls himself a beach bum. J.D. is working on a murder of a retired fisherman who was in WWII. Her and Matt saw the murderer go off the bridge into the bay being chased by a cop who was down the road from the murder. They have no idea who he is. A car is following J.D. and when Matt asks why someone is sent to break some bones for sticking his nose where it belongs. Matt has different plans. Jock who is close to Matt is a agent who belongs to a agency that has no name. He reports to his boss and the President of the United States. Jock can find out a lot with just a phone call. He is sent into a lot of situations to take care of top secret jobs. He is in town to do a golf tournament with a another friend Logan. Jock does not like that someone is after Matt. J.D. likes Jock but has a hard time with his ethics. Like taking out four bad guys. Breaking into places instead of getting a warrant ect. The plot twists and turns I did not expect most of it. There is plenty of action, bad guys and a lot of death before it is over with. If you like the other Matt Royal books you will want to read Found. I look forward to reading the next book. I was given this ebook to read and asked to give honest review of it by Netgalley. 11/19/2013 PUB Oceanview Publishing 325 pages ISBN:9781608090990
