As the author of this book, my rating is slightly biased. Of everything I've ever written, however, this is genuinely one of my favorites. I came to adore Jonella Joy Johnson, the main character, for her tenacity, goodness and spirit. Jonella is an orphan who's been raised by her fanatically religious Aunt Eula in a small Midwest town. It's graduation time, 1959, and the young woman knows she stands on the threshold of a whole new life. But, of course, the doors that open and close to her during that long, hot summer are not what she expects! Her little world around Fountain Street will never be the same, and neither will she.
