Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7 The 11 tales in this slim volume, translated directly from the Grimm brothers' Kinder- und Hausmarchen, deal with a wide assortment of animalsfaithful dogs, deceitful cats, clever hedgehogs and greedy wolves. Well-known favorites such as ``The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids'' and ``The Bremen Town Musicians'' are included, along with the lesser-known ``The Fox and the Horse,'' ``The Cat and Mouse in Partnership'' and ``The Hare and the Hedgehog.'' Great attention has been paid to duplicating the tone of the original versions; as a result, the language of the stories is colloquial without being condescending. The detailed watercolor and ink illustrations reflect the warmth and humor of the tales. The stories are available in other editions of the Grimms' tales, yet this volume still deserves a place in folklore collections.Denise A. Anton, Corn Belt Library System, Normal, Ill.
