Fractured Minds is an engaging text that introduces the student, health professional, and lay reader to clinical neuropsychology. Two introductory chapters precede 17 chapters that each focus on a specific disorder. Description: First published in 1996, this book offers a multidimensional perspective on neurologic illness incorporating medical information, neuropsychological test results, and humanistic understanding.
Purpose: Dr. Ogden certainly meets her objectives in providing a basic and fundamental neuropsychological and a theoretical perspective for each disorder. More importantly, the illustrative case studies highlight the impact of neurological disorders on daily life, and also underscore the perseverance of the human spirit.
Audience: The information is appropriate for students, residents, and non-neuropsychologist practitioners, as well as professionals intimately familiar with neuropsychological theory. Moreover, the straightforward presentation of the medical information and illustrative case studies may offer some utility to patients as well.
Features: After reading the initial two chapters on neuropsychological theory, the reader has the option of reading the remaining 17 chapters in any order. Each chapter begins by covering the main theoretical and neuropathological aspects of each disorder while incorporating recent research in the particular area. This is followed by an illustrative case study that, unlike most books, does not let the reader forget the human side of each illness.
Assessment: Although this book is very different than others in the field, its incorporation of the human element makes it stand out as a "must have." The second edition offers new chapters on multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, and Huntington's disease, and improves previous chapters with new medical information and patient updates.
