Freddie & Gingersnap (Freddie & Gingersnap Series #1) by Vincent X. Kirsch

Freddie is a little dinosaur that wants more than anything to know what clouds are like. Gingersnap is a little dragon that wishes more than anything to fly. When Gingersnap in a failed first attempt at flight falls right on top of Freddie, the two glare at each other. Then they growl and hiss at each other. But when their individual howls and stomps find a common rhythm, their attempts at aggression transform into a dance of friendship and brings each of them that much closer to realizing his or her dream.

I I don’t have children of my own so I know very little about what children like in picture books. I bought this book for my nephew because the story is sweet and I loved the illustrations. It turns out my instincts were correct. He absolutely loves this book. Almost every page is filled with little creatures that are fun to find. Its a joy to read it out loud together because its filled with sound effects, (“snip snap”, “click clack”, “Hooowl!"). And the story is both sweet and adventurous (together Freddie and Gingersnap figure out how to fly), (who doesn’t want to learn to fly?). My nephew loves the illustrations so much he’s asked me to paint the jungle scenes on his wall! So the next time I visit I plan to be very busy, (the illustrations are watercolor over line drawings so I expect they will be easy and fun to copy). If for no other reason, buy this book as a visual resource. Its beautiful.
