Overview

A graceful player of prodigious range, keyboardist David Benoit blends classical, jazz, and pop music elements to create a distinctive, delicately melodic sound that often takes on a kind of cinematic lushness. He's best known for his rendition of Vince Guaraldi's "Peanuts" classic "Linus and Lucy," but that shouldn't overshadow his stylistic versatility and talent as a composer. The bright, perky title track and the romantic "Kei's Song" (a valentine to Benoit's wife) are well-loved smooth-jazz fare. Benoit also takes the listener on an atmospheric journey, "Along the Milky Way," and turns pensive on the ballad "Pieces of Time" and then jazzy on "Del Sasser." FREEDOM AT MIDNIGHT is a memorable offering from one of smooth jazz's unique and most enduring talents.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Pianist David Benoit's debut for GRP was a big seller and set the tone for the next decade of his career. In general, Benoit's piano is heard in the forefront, joined by oversized rhythm sections (including the Rippingtons' Russ Freeman) and a string section. A strictly boppish quartet rendition of "Del Sasser" with altoist Sam Riney is a nice change of pace, but otherwise, the music is melodic, lightweight, and better for backgrounds than for close listening. Overall, this program is pleasant and not at all objectionable, but difficult to remember once the CD is finished.
