French Phonetics: A Guide to Correct Pronunciation of French and Cahier d'Exercises / Edition 1

This enhanced edition of French Phonetics is intended for college-level instruction, for self-study and for reference purposes. The text, including Cahier d'Exercices, helps the student to become proficient in the pronunciation of French by explaining the characteristics of the French sound system clearly and systematically and by giving precise rules of pronunciation throughout. After introducing the learner to the International Phonetic Alphabet, the manual proceeds to a thorough examination of every sound in the French language in relation to its spelling and its phonological surroundings. If the book is used as a reference tool, the reader will be able to verify the pronunciation of many difficult verb forms and names not found in a dictionary. Students will be able to phonetically transcribe French words, to read a phonetically transcribed text, and most importantly to pronounce correctly any French word that they encounter, even if they have never seen it before. Cassettes or CD's for French Phonetics and the Cahier d'Exercices are available by contacting the author at; Please cc her alternate e-mail address in your request:

This book is very thorough, but it has some drawbacks. I bought it looking for a book to work through, but it's pretty much a reference book only, not a workbook. And without an audio reference for the phonetics discussed, it's really impossible for me to determin exactly how to pronounce the various vowels even though everything is in the standard phonetic alphabet... Just think about the different way a Bostonian and a Kansas City native would say the word 'bear' and you see the problem with the english examples of vowel sounds. That being said, if you're currently in a French class or otherwise have access to proper french sounds, this is an extremely helpfull book, because you can use one word as a reference for many others, since they're grouped by sounds in the book.
