After the holidays, Humphrey is shocked by a big surprise in Room 26-a new class pet! Humphrey tries to be welcoming, but Og the frog doesn't respond to any of his friendly squeaks or visits (remember, he has a lock-that-doesn't-lock). Plus, the students are so interested in Og, they almost stop paying attention to Humphrey altogether. Humphrey doesn't like the mad-bad-sad feelings he's had since Og came, but luckily he still gets to have adventures with different kids on the weekends.  Friendship can be tricky, but Humphrey is an intrepid problem-solver. If any hamster can become buddies with a frog, he can.

This was a great book! At first I only picked it up becacause I saw the cute little hamster on the front... how could you resist!! Then I read the inside cover and it sounded good, but after reading it I knew to was more than good! This book talks about friendships, fighting, bullies, and excepting to make the best of you life... from a hamster's view. He learns so much about friendship through the kids it helps him to be kinder to the new class pet, who he is totally jelous of! This book should win a newbery medal award!

Humor with Humphrey, could be another title for this book and it is a book youth ages eight to twelve may want to read more than once. For inquisitive and avid readers this Humphrey tale will be a joy. If your young reader enjoys classroom stories and talking pets, this is sure to please him or her. Friendship According to Humphrey is a wonderful second novel about the protagonist's adventures in room 26. Humphrey will make young readers giggle, chuckle and chortle, howl, and laugh out loud at his antics. Educational entertainment is in store for the readers of this novel. Also, this work of fiction will hold the readers attention and they should be able to finish it in one weekend. With an entertaining story line, lively dialogue, and delightful "characters" this story is sure to be a "hit."

I purchased #1 in the series and read the book to first and second graders. They loved the story - both the boys and girls. I only read book one to them even though I have all 6 in the series. I highly recommend the Humphrey series. The children couldn't wait until Wednesdays when I came in to helpout and for me to start reading. Since I started later in the school season I only finished book one. Next school year I will start out with the Humphrey series and get to read more books to them. Please note that the first and second graders are in one class, so the first graders will have already experienced Humphrey. Also, some of the children went out and bought their own Humphrey adventures. HUMPHREY IS GREAT

Hamsters turn out to be very smart and helpful classroom pets. In this novel, the class pet, Humphrey observes Room 26 from his cage, and observes all of the friendships and realationships in the classroom and the travels his classmates take him on. Humphrey himself also faces a friendship challenge after a new classroom pet, Og, shares Room 26's attention. Humphrey tries his hardest to mend all realtionships between the classmates, and he succeeds but the whole time, doesn't realize the realtionship he has with the new class pet, Og. This book would be a good novel to read over a span where the classroom is about to welcome a new pet or a new pupil. It teaches friendship and care for the classroom pet.
