One especially useful feature of this general book on dog selection, training, and care is the appendix, ``Puppy Evaluation.'' Here, Hancock outlines ten tests which may be used with pups as young as seven weeks in order to gain some clues about the nature of an individual dog. Since individual temperament is important in predicting a dog's potential as pet and companion, tips on evaluating this really help a prospective owner. The section on basic obedience training is well done, especially the explanations about how dogs learn. Because it contains material for both novice and experienced dog owners, this book would be a good choice for any collection. Susan Matusak, Wilson Coll. Lib., Chambersburg, Pa.
