It has been said that losing a child is the worst heartbreak one can experience. As a parent, one prays that they never experience the pain involved. In the case where a child's death is attributable to something that could have easily been prevented, it is then that the heartbreak turns to rage. This is Pat Bluth's story. When her daughter was killed at the age of 17 by a drunk driver, Bluth's life spun out of control. Eaten up by anger and debilitating emotions, Bluth searched for ways out of her pain, but then when the justice system eventually failed her, matters were only made worse. Filled with anger, thoughts of revenge and hatred, Bluth watched as her own life slowly came to a standstill. Married and the mother of two other children, Bluth's despondency was affecting all of her relationships. Years passed before she realized she had to try something different. From Pain to Peace is not a novel to get lost up in; nor is it a book to put down and easily forget. It is the true story of one woman's horrific loss and the emotions, challenges and frustrations she experienced while learning to cope with same. Bluth turned to her faith in God and, though it may not be the answer for someone else in her situation, it worked for her. The rage, hatred and grief she felt are analogous to her loss; as is the manner in which her rage, hatred and grief stymied her progress toward finding inner peace. The remainder of her journey - and resulting epiphany -is a beautiful testament to the power of forgiveness and the possibility of hope. Bluth's story is a wake-up call; certainly for those that drink and drive, but also for those battling demons after this type of loss. The tragedy of losing a child, as heavy a burden as that is, will linger in a soul forever, but Bluth proves that hatred and rage can be gotten past. Hers is a proven path to spiritual healing.
Pat has created a story that shows the path she followed after the death of her daughter. I was moved by the story. As a mom, I can only imagine the feelings of hopelessness a mother would feel after losing a child. I was hooked in chapter 1 and didn't put the book down. This is a fabulous book for anyone suffering. Anyone who cannot take the first step in healing. Anyone who needs to find peace. I hope to see more works from this author in the future.
