Hollywood set designer Dwayne Higgins thought he had it all: a rewarding career in the film industry, a beautiful girlfriend, and a daughter on the way. He lived in a lavish home, with two expensive cars in his driveway. Talented and charming, Dwayne worked alongside Hollywood’s top celebrities and directors and attended glamorous parties at celebrity hotspots.
But beneath his veneered lifestyle Dwayne struggled with alcoholism and drug addiction, which – in times of stress – threatened his career and his relationships with those he loved most. Dwayne faced two life-altering events within months of one another: the birth of his beloved daughter and a writers and actors strike that destabilized a career that took 15 years to build.
Being out of work for up to two years he reached for prescription pain pills, cocaine, and alcohol to cope, Dwayne’s life began to spiral helplessly out of control. In a matter of a year, he lost his young family, his home, and his celebrated career, while a third drunk-driving charge led to his deportation. He arrived back in Canada with nothing but a bag of clothes.
Within two years, Dwayne went from living the American dream in Los Angeles, to a brief, unsuccessful event-planning career in Bali, Indonesia, to the drug-infested back alleys of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, where three suicide attempts and heroin use left him reeling in hospital rooms. Eventually, Dwayne would find solutions: he would find that someone who would help him confront his demons, and a rehabilitation program that led to a moving reunion with his estranged daughter.
Surrendering to the inner voice that was there with him all along, Dwayne Higgins would ultimately journey past success and failure, toward a life filled with redemption, love, and hope.

About the Author
Dwayne had mild success in pursuit of an acting career, but he would eventually move into doing props and art direction working with the world's top celebrities and directors. In the year 2000, Hollywood was hit with a writers and actors strike. Addiction would take hold of Dwayne's life, spinning in such an uncontrollable downward spiral that it would take him to the deepest darkest pits of hell. Within two years he would lose everything he loved, including his daughter, friends, career and all his material possessions. He ended up with a third drunk driving charge and was deported back to Canada.
Upon his arrival, Dwayne would continue down his path of destruction with an insatiable appetite for heroin and prescription pain pills. He found himself struggling to survive on the drug-infested streets of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. At the lowest points of his life, he would try suicide three times, with the last attempt being a four-story dive off his mother's balcony. He would spend six months in the hospital suffering from a punctured lung and broken pelvis. Dwayne needed to learn to walk again, not only physically but spiritually as well.
Dwayne would end up traveling the world serving and doing missionary work in Mexico, Indonesia, and Africa. He would find salvation and redemption with that someone who would pull him out of the world of addiction and set him back on his feet. Dwayne engaged in a successful Christian rehabilitation program. After eleven years of separation, he reunited with his fourteen-year-old daughter who urged him to record his remarkable story in From Reel to Real. Today, Dwayne continues to live in Vancouver.

A courageous, moving and unforgettable book. An unforgettable, moving story about a man's battle with addiction and his journey to recovery and redemption. It was heartbreaking and utterly compelling. Your journey of pain, faith and redemption is remarkable This book offers glimpses of struggle and despair, but it's also about hope and human strength. It's inspiring and absorbing. Highly recommended.
This autobiography is an extremely gritty and raw testimony of a man's journey through the worst encounters in addiction !! It will make you not only feel for the author, but for the ones who love him as well !! I am SO proud of Dwayne for being obedient to God's call to write this book for the world to experience !!! It made me envision what The Prodigal Son in today's world would be like ! This had to be most difficult in re-telling the life he lived of agony, pain, and loss in every area imagined !! Not only will it help others in their own struggles with their demons, but revealing this traumatic walk will also be self-healing for himself as well !! God never leaves His beautiful children... no matter how badly our choices allow the enemy to hold us in bondage !! The Lord will always prevail.... and this is an amazing example of the turn-around He can do in our lives - if we choose to open up and let Him in !!!
Raw, vivid story of a man overcoming continuous struggles and failures throughout his life and the inspiring journey to recovery and salvation. Highly Recommended!
