Overview

Mary Beth is the main character in "From the Hill Side." She is strong willed and cannot take advise, she insults and degrades and holds herself above others, even though it is obvious she is not superior to anyone. She puts herself first before everyone including God. And seemly, not having any responsibilities, she comes to a point where her own act catches up with her and she gets the ultimate response.

The poetry is sectioned into four parts: 1) Love and loss, 2) Tragedy, 3) Religion, and 4) Brotherhood. The brotherhood section has the most number of poems because of the author's precarious lifestyle as a youth. Most all Gerard's poetry deals with some sort of hardship. I think this is an attempt to correct or help with an answer and to look forwards' and make amends. In conclusion, the author agrees, "We all make mistakes."
