Overview

From the Land of the Kalevala

Mystical in voice and instrumental execution, the Karelian Folk Music Ensemble are a trio of musicians from Petrozavodsk, in the Republic of Karelia, Russia. Influenced by a mélange of Finnish and Russian cultures, the initial folkish impact of the sound has much in common with traditional Celtic song and polka structures. Pleasant, unassuming, but terrificly endearing, the wonderful melody that introduces "Ripatska" is a key example of the subtle charms the trio has to offer. Decoded in the liner notes, the material stems from protection spells against evil wizards, Finnish ballads, and epic fables. A host of little-known traditional instruments compose the sound (Birch bark flute, kantele, scythe, etc.), but the purity of the ensemble's work is refreshing in its unpretentiousness.
