Moving beyond the basics of public speaking and addresses the foundations necessary for preparing an engaging sermon. Broken down into five parts, Franks and Carroll work through finding the sermon to tell – exegetical or topical, personal testimony or children’s sermon; finding your own voice and using the hymnal; reading the bible aloud and dealing with that fear; communication on paper; and communication beyond the paper and practice. Each of the sections is designed to fit into a 2-hour session with goal of preparing an individual to become a preacher.

About the Author

David Carroll is ordained in the United Methodist Church and has served in youth ministry for 25 years. Carroll and Franks began developing a course of lay speakers after an invitation from the annual conference Director of Lay Speaking Ministries.

Tony Franks is a Certified Lay Speaker in the Mississippi Annual Conference. He has served as president of the Mississippi Chapter of the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts. Franks is a high school music and English teacher, and has also taught college English and oral communications.
