Overview

This early work by Wilkie Collins was originally published in 1874. Born in Marylebone, London in 1824, Collins' family enrolled him at the Maida Hill Academy in 1835, but then took him to France and Italy with them between 1836 and 1838. Returning to England, Collins attended Cole's boarding school, and completed his education in 1841, after which he was apprenticed to the tea merchants Antrobus & Co. in the Strand. In 1846, Collins became a law student at Lincoln's Inn, and was called to the bar in 1851, although he never practiced. It was in 1848, a year after the death of his father, that he published his first book, The Memoirs of the Life of William Collins, Esq., R.A., to good reviews. The 1860s saw Collins' creative high-point, and it was during this decade that he achieved fame and critical acclaim, with his four major novels, The Woman in White (1860), No Name (1862), Armadale (1866) and The Moonstone (1868). The Moonstone, meanwhile is seen by many as the first true detective novel - T. S. Eliot called it "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels...in a genre invented by Collins and not by Poe." Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Wilkie's Collins' novella "The Frozen Deep" is based on the play of the same name he co-wrote with Charles Dickens. The setting is a British naval expedition to discover the Northwest Passage (loosely inspired by John Franklin's ill-fated voyage). The story is a melodrama about two men on the voyage -- one of whom is engaged to be married to a woman that the other has just broken up with. This fact is discovered after they have been shipwrecked in the Arctic for over a year, with predictably melodramatic consequences. Suffice it to say it all turns out better than Franklin's actual expedition and that the play this is based on was the basis of the ending of a Tale of Two Cities.Nowhere nearly as good as any of Collins' novels that I've read with little in the way of real suspense, mystery or psychological depth. But still enjoyable nonetheless and worth reading.

Owl Mask wanders into the party, almost like a party crasher of sorts, for she is hours late and she didn't reserve. Her dress is a strapless one, colored silver. The garment hits just above her knees, revealing that she has paired black Doc Martens with it. Her light gray eyes shine slightly behind her mask and her golden honey hair is pulled up in a slightly messy bun. She starts to look around the room for no one in particular. <p> ((If anyone wishes to talk, can you please put your mask name in the review box? I can't see headlines on my NOOK. :/))

Welcome to the Presidential Dance! I hope you wore our country's colors! This is how we will make this night perfect: dance with your special someone and be adorable. At the end if the night we will vote on the cutest couple, and they will be given the title of president and first man or lady. We will mostly play presidential parodies, but if you have requests, then we will play them. If you want your song played immediately then I would suggest that you bribe the DJ, but "donations" are optional. There are cookies, cupcakes, snacks, and alcoholic/non-alcohlic drinks. Eat lots of food, woo your date, and above all have fun!

"Not as often as l should," he admitted, gauging Howl's reaction with mild curiosity. "Most of the time I'm at this school-slash-dorm place? I don't remember much of that place because it's where I go to be sober. Not pretty," Cecil shuddered, regarding his bandaged hand with distaste. "These're what keep me sane." Fresh tracks dotted the inside of his forearm and he shrugged, fully expecting Howl to up and leave once he knew.

She stauntered in wearing a long sleeved, turtle neck-like black dress. It was matte black and tight to her skin, almost seeming as if it was her skin. Her dress was long and dragged behind her just a bit. As for her mask, it seemed to be a ceramic-looking ram head, complete with horns that curved in giant spirals on each side of her head. Her hair was pinned back in a bun, away from the mask and away from her shoulders.
