Hatch, a horticulturist who participated in the recreation of Jefferson's garden and orchards, presents a detailed history of Monticello's gardens and of early American pomology. He also describes the restoration project and the challenge of locating the many exotic varieties and fancy fruits such as Albemarle Pippin apples, Green Gage plums, and Oldmixon Free peaches. The many illustrations include drawings and diagrams from classic works such as Andrew Jackson Downing's (1845), and pages from Jefferson's original orchard plans.
