Ayers wasn't anything special and probably still is not. He spends much ink attempting to rationalize looking for thrills and finding himself at the expense of others. Just another mixed-up kid from a privileged background. This from The Quest for Cosmic Justice by Thomas Sowell comes to mind:
The prerequisites of a viable civilization have never been an interesting subject to those seeking the cheap glory of taking a stand against society. What currently exists is the fruits of centuries of efforts and sacrifices. But is seen as inferior to what they can produce in their imagination immediately at zero cost, and by the way, in the comfort and security provided by the society they disdain.
