I am using Joomla! for quite a few years now, and so far I had my hunger for knowledge stilled with a number of books on the subject. So this is the first time I learned from a video and it truely works better then a book (in my opinion). The tutorials are very intuitive and straightforward and solve problems/issues in a very easy-to-follow manner. I have one question though. The 13 chapters are very long, and it's difficult to retrieve specific information in chapters that are for example 60 to 90 minutes long. Is there an index to the chapters available? Say... chapter Three... minute eight explains this or that. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Barrie North clearly knows his Joomla!, php, etc. But this Britain communicates in a style that is terse and the content is lacking in the detail needed in a How-To book. As noted by other reviewers, Chapter 6 is out of sync i.e., the audio is separated from the video by as much as 30-40 seconds in places, leaving the user in a constant state of confusion. Thus, that chapter is a waste. (P.S. B&N: will be asking for refund!) At times the video and book seem more focused on promoting his Joomla! related web business than teaching the basics of the application. Mr. North needs to hire a good editor and institute improved quality control before another edition is created. The series suffers pedagogically (an adjective describing how well a person or thing teaches) in that the content lacks clear and logical organization. Something as basic as a chart showing the relationships among Joomla's components would be helpful but such is missing. Again, North is obviously an accomplished programmer but as a teacher he has a way to go. Not recommended.

First off, on the video disk, chapter 6 is messed up. I did some searching on the net and found you can download a corrected version of chapter 6 here: Just click the Update tab once you go to that page. Anyway most of the chapters are informative and well written/watched. Chapters 4 and 5 are extremely good. Chapter 2 sped through it and missed tons of steps I had to go through when I installed it. Also the installing WAMP5 should of been before chapter 2 and not in the appendex. A couple of times the author while recording it messed up the audio and started it over and they kept the mistakes in. Was pretty funny but those who made this training video should be shot. Too many errors in the training video, not due to the author but due to their editing. The chapter 6 thing really is not excusable. Didn't they watch the finished product from start to finish once before cutting the disks? Errors in the editing of the training video aside it is a good tutorial. I would of liked to have seen much more expansion on the menus section but what is there is basic and gets you going. The accompanying manual gives the exact same info as the videos do. I was surprised there was no real additional info in the book. Just to be clear the video disk is not a DVD to watch in a DVD player. it is a DVD data disk to be stuck in your computer and a program to run to launch the videos.

I had tremendous hope for this product! I sat down to watch this and partway through Chapter I notice that he starts to use the phrase 'blah, blah, blah' to indicate that this was an incomplete and unedited raw video! The 'book' that is included is not worth the paper that it is printed on. It is less of an outline than the reviews included on this webpage. I suspect that I could learn more on Youtube than I could on this video. So disappointed after having such high hopes!

This is a good book for the beginning Joomla! developer. The material is presented in a step by step fashion. It will get your site up and running in short order. Then it's off for another book for advanced studies. I suggest getting a Joomla! Bible resource to go along with this book. The DVD though valuable aid needs work as it can become tedious. The presentation is full of blah blahs that should have been edited out. Also there is no way to step through the video at your own pace. You are forced to go through an entire lesson from beginning to end. It would have been nice to have a slider so that one could have reviewed a particular point of interest. Otherwise the reference is a good buy!

I think the book and training would be valuable for the beginning Joomla administrator, or someone who has not used Joomla before. I did not find anything new or innovative that I did not already know. I was hoping to see a little more substance around adding eCommerce capabilities.

This book combined with the dvd is packed with step-by-step tutorials to show you how to build a JOOMLA! site from the beginning stages all the up to creating your own css Templates. I have learned that JOOMLA! is a very dynamic content management system through Barrie North's book. When you apply the tutorials and tips to your own website development you will discover just how often you will be using the book. I found it to be an excellent resource for JOOMLA! users.

I wish I would have had this book and DVD before I started building my site. Great resource to have before undertaking building a Joomla site. The one disappoint has been with the DVD tutorial. You can't stop and go back in it. The person who does the training in it talks fast, does not have a "now stop and do it" pause. His voice doesn't change, so watching and listening to him lulls you into a nap. The book and DVD are great for understanding how to build different Joomla sites, but the DVD needs some work on being a true tutorial.

This book is combined with another book with video, which together are great to walk step by step, from the first step to very advance, in additional to the real life example.
