Overview

This is the best instruction book on oil painting translated from Spanish by its author, teacher, and artist Alejandro De Jesús and edited by José Feliciano, an artist teacher himself. Alejandro's ideas are explained in simple words with 646 images. This book follows a similar but expanded format of the five-video course, with the same title that Alejandro published in 2006 and which has been used by students and artists around the world. It is a complete oil painting guide that provides the beginner as well as the advanced student with a wealth of valuable solutions, techniques, and recommendations. The experienced artist will also find many, very useful ideas that will serve as a reference in his craft as a painter.
Some of the topics covered in this course are color theory, human skin color, face and figure, eyes, skin temperature, tones and values, edges, color scale limitations, texture, light temperature, color vibration, pre-mixed palette vs free palette, linear and aerial perspective, scumbling, composition, painting opposites, concept, loose painting vs. tight painting, aesthetics, hierarchy, light, and shadow, the pattern of tones and colors, color schemes, planes, impasto and much more. It also includes the subject of gesture drawing to loosen up your style.
Alejandro De Jesús has more than 67 years of experience in art and taught drawing and painting for 28 years every Saturday to children and adults in his studio in Caguas, Puerto Rico. He is currently dedicated to teaching students through social media in the Internet. For many years he also emailed a Saturday newsletter to all subscribers, titled Regalos de Arte. His works have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in Puerto Rico and the United States.
Alejandro is the author of Fundamentos de la Pintura al Óleo, a comprehensive five-video course in Spanish at the elementary, intermediate, and advanced levels. His drawings and paintings are in public and private collections. Some of his works can be seen in the Museo de Arte de Caguas in Puerto Rico.

About the Author

Alejandro De Jesús was born in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico but grew up in the town of Caguas. As a child he drew and painted all the images he liked: super heroes, faces, cars, monsters and the like. He remembers doing many illustrations at his grade school before every holiday. At the age of ten he received a scholarship from The City of Caguas to study art under the tutelage of Victor Torres Lizardi, a professional artist from Caguas who awakened in him, his everlasting love for art. Torres Lizardi led him in his first serious steps in art through working in mediums of charcoal, tempera, and oil. At fifteen he moved to New York City, where he was impressed by the masters’ work shown at museums. Alejandro DJ studied at Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, and The Art Students League of New York.
Back in his home island, he studied at The Art Students League of San Juan, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the University of Puerto Rico, where he graduated with honors. He uses pastel, acrylic but mostly oil paints. Alejandro is a dedicated art teacher and a natural figurative and portrait artist but also likes painting any offbeat subject. In 1985 he founded Estudio Alejandro DJ, an art school in Caguas born of a genuine interest for a figurative art education. He dedicated 28 years of his life to teaching children and adults basic and advanced drawing and painting principles in the traditional method. In 1987 he received an award for his oil painting The Hat Salesman from The Art Students League of San Juan. This work and another of his oil paintings titled The Class were acquired by the Caguas Museum of Art to be part of its permanent collection. Alejandro’s work has been exhibited widely in group and solo shows in the United States and Puerto Rico.
