It doesn't get any better than this. Barbra Streisand won an Oscar for her film debut, Funny Girl, in which she re-created her superstar-making 1964 Broadway triumph as Ziegfeld Follies comedienne Fanny Brice, a role she was cosmically predestined to play. At the peak of her amazing vocal powers, Streisand, then 26, outdistances the stage version of Funny Girl with superior takes of signature tunes "I'm the Greatest Star" and "Don't Rain on My Parade." William Wyler's 1968 film wedges in Billy Rose's delightful "I'd Rather Be Blue Over You (Than Happy With Somebody Else)" and the famous Brice torch song, "My Man," both given superlative readings by the star. This album is a virtual one-woman show, and Streisand's bone-tingling performance of "People" remains one of the greatest moments in an extraordinary career.
