About the Author

LaVyrle Spencer is a contemporary and historical romance novelist who has written twelve New York Times bestsellers. Whether set in the Old West or in present day suburban Minnesota, a Spencer novel means seeing love in a new light and meeting characters so real it's all you can do not to climb into the pages yourself. Several of Spencer's books have been made into movies (Publishers Weekly called one of her television deals "precedent-setting") and in 1988 she was inducted into the Romance Writers of America Hall of Fame. She lives with her husband, Dan, in North Oaks, Minnesota.

This book caught my attention, as all of Spencer's books do, more than any other. The intense game of hide-and-go-seek of feelings for eachother keeps you guessing if the two main characters will actually end up happily ever after. It is well written and couldn't be done any better. Get you tissues out, then smile.

This book is not to be missed. It gives hope to every woman who is not perfect, that there is a beautiful man out there who loves her. Set in the time of prohibition in Kansas, Spencer has a way of dealing with outside issues involving America, that allows the reader to experience what it might have been like, while weaving a web of love amidst the pages. A great book. Historical Romance lovers will not be disappointed.

This is my favorite book written by LaVyrle Spencer. All of her characters are well-written but Agatha (Gussie) and Scott are my favorites. Watching the relationship unfold from adversarial to like to love is a gift. No matter how many times I enjoy this book it never fails to delight.

I fell in love with this book within the first few pages. The stubborn love makes this book stand out from others within this genre. I can't say enough great things about it...a must-read for romantics!

My all time favorite novel by this author. Couldnt put it down and wish I had bought it as a paperback instead of a ebook because it did have some typos and skipped pages.

Gussie, a cripple, was stuck with Gandy. He was the hero and a slut's leaving.

A truly wonderful love story in the 1880's. I greatly enjoyed this story. It's author recommended by a favorite author of mine, Kristin Hannah. Just enough strife to make it not a "La La Land" story, but enough to make it greatly realistic and tense. I recommend. JDL 2/21/17

First they were totally in opposition. Then they became best friends and eventually they fall in love. Nothing new under the sun but done so well you'll love every moment of it. Add a supporting cast of quirky characters and an adorable orphan and you won't want the story to end. Don't pass it up.

I tried to download this book along with another book by the same author. They would not download properly and both opened to another book by the same author I had previously read on my Nook. After spending hours on the phone with technical support, they couldn't fix the problems so I asked for refunds for both books (haven't received them yet). Be very careful with this book and The Hellion. They are good books just beware of the problems I have had.
