A Game of Scandal by Kathryn Smith

There's nothing quite like scandalous behavior hidden behind a mask of elegance, and Lilith Mallory knows the truth of this more than most. The owner of the most prestigious club in London, and wealthier in her own right than most would believe, she's considered too scandalous for polite society. But that doesn't stop the men of the ton from eating her food, enjoying her wine, or gaming at her tables.

Then, into her life, strides Gabriel Warren, the Earl of Angletwood. He had broken Lilith's heart years ago, and now he has returned from his life in the 'colonies' to discover his family fortune ruined. Now he comes to her with an outrageous proposal...if she will help him financially he will give her the respectability she craves under the guise of marriage. But given the strictures of society is this a bargain she is willing—or able—to accept?

About the Author

Kathryn Smith has always loved happy endings. From the bedtime stories her wildly imaginative mother told, to the soap operas she wasn't supposed to watch, Kathryn loved to speculate as to how the characters would end up. Needless to say the entire Smith household heard about it when things did not go as young Kathryn thought they ought. Through her school years, Kathryn wrote stories and books for her friends to read. Even during college, when she studied journalism, her need to make up her own tales often drove her to late nights at the typewriter, writing about sexy men and the women they fell in love with. Fortunately, Kathryn's idea of sexy has changed over the years. Instead of rock stars and spies she writes about lords and...well, spies. The best part is she gets to share these stories with a few more people than were in her homeroom class!

Among the genre, heartbreaking mistakes and miscommunications are common. This book takes it to a new level, yet manages to be realistic in explaining how each of the lead couple come to their conflicting and often hurtful conclusions. They are in the classic spiral of male/female emotional conflict--loving each other but somehow always saying the wrong thing and arguing to protect themselves against commitment and vulnerability. It was painful in a way, but realistic. Other aspects of the story don't stand up to real scrutiny (how can she really go from ruined, club-owning woman to society maven??), but that is common with this genre. The sex scenes are hot, if brief, and not the main focus of the story. I prefer Stephanie Laurens' books, but this will do well in a pinch.

Like the sex, but love books that also have a story line. Great read, loved the characters. Not the typical love story.
