Overview

A Garden in the Rain (MacLeods Series #4) by Lynn Kurland

New York Times bestselling author Lynn Kurland tells the story of Patrick MacLeod—the first MacLeod to discover the secrets of his ancestral land…

Patrick MacLeod is haunted by his past, by events he had no control over and wishes desperately he could change. He hasn’t the heart for love, nor the time for rescuing maidens in distress of their own making. Until he sees a woman who touches his heart and stirs his soul…and makes him believe love might be possible again after all.

For Madelyn Phillips, Scotland is the land of dreams, filled with magic, romance, and handsome Highland lords. Unfortunately, the reality of her dream vacation is no car, no luggage, and a pesky ex-fiancé determined to shadow her every move. She thinks her dreaming is in vain.

Until she sees a man standing on a windswept moor, a Highlander full of secrets and longing, and knows she has seen her destiny.

But the past isn’t through with either of them, and it will take all the love both of them possess to make their dreams come true…

A trip to Scotland was supposed to be her honeymoon, but Madelyn Phillips was dumped before the wedding. Considering how obnoxious her fiance, Bentley, is, that is most likely one of the better things to happen. Still, she decides to take the trip, only to find that Bentley has arrived ahead of her and hijacked her room. He has also come to 'generously' offer to take her back, despite the weight she has gained since his rejection. Madelyn is less than enthusiastic and refuses. However, Bentley is determined. Her flight to escape him will bring lead her to meet handsome Scottish lord, Patrick MacLeod on a windswept moor. He rescues her from Bentley and carries her home. ................. Patrick is unlike anything Madelyn has ever met, as well he should be. Patrick has traveled forward in time from ancient Scotland. Madelyn appears to be the woman he was destined to love, at least in the opinion of his resident ghosts. There are some obstacles though. The father of Patricks' first wife is out for his blood, and Bentley is still hanging around making a nuisance of himself. For her own safety, Patrick decides to send Madelyn home. She makes a detour first, to medieval Scotland. It is up to Patrick to rescue her from his clan's sworn enemies. ....................... ***** Laughter rolls off the pages in this splendid romance. Even in the darkest moments, there is something to smile about. Ms. Kurland is truly the reigning queen of time travel romance. *****

Lynn Kurland outdoes romance again as Patrick MacLeod takes on the role of a reluctant knight in shining armor to Madelyn Phillips. Madelyn's ex-fiance is determined to make her trip as awful as possible, first by stealing her clothes, then her car, and finally freezing her credit cards. With nothing left to her but the breathtaking Scottish scenery, she determines to make the best of her only shot at happiness. But as Madelyn struggles to avoid her pesky ex-fiance, Patrick struggles with the demons of his past, and only together can they outwit both their problems. All in all, a wonderful read! Ms. Kurland can spin a fine story that grips the reader and doesn't let her go until the very last page. You'll find yourself sighing, laughing, crying, and gasping with each turn of the page. The only problem with this novel, as with all other Kurland novels, is that the story comes to an end.

She makes romance what it should be. Full of mystery and wonder.

What more can I say, than WOW !!.. this story of Patrick and Madelyn was totally amazing.. This is a book you definitely will not put down until finished...and at 420 pages it's a long thoroughly riveting, emotional tale. Lynn Kurland has the 'touch' when it comes to writing about these MacLeods, and that 'touch' reaches out to the reader...as we go through so many feelings reading and at the same time immersing ourselves in the plot.. .. Indulge and be delighted..

Law partner Bentley Taylor III ended his engagement to attorney Madelyn Phillips in order to marry someone else. He also left her with no job and no place to live. Still, Madelyn always dreamed of leaving the United States to tour the Highlands of Scotland so she goes on her honeymoon sans her husband.

Bentley follows her and makes life miserable by using his contacts to cut off her credit and steals her clothing. Still Madelyn refuses to have anything to do with her former suitor. Instead she is attracted to Patrick Macleod, who hates life ever since he lost his cuckolding wife and child six years ago. Everyone except perhaps his brother and sister-in-law thinks he killed his spouse. Especially blaming him is his in-laws, who want him dead. In this environs, he does not want to fall in love, but he cannot resist Madelyn.

Fans of contemporary romances starring two delightful lead characters and containing a touch of the supernatural and a degree of mystery will enjoy A GARDEN IN THE RAIN. The story line is fast-paced, but the behavior of Bentley does not become clear until late in the book, a major turn-off as he is a key player who makes no sense until deep into what is otherwise a delightful story. Still the cast is strong and the different sub-genre elements blend nicely together so that the audience receives a fabulous novel.

I was really disappointed by this book. Madelyn's ex is such a one-dimensional villain with such a weak and contrived motive for harrassing her it made me cringe. Even the name of his cologne was hokey and overdone--EternalRiches. OMG! Since there was nothing redeeming about his personality, it really reflected poorly on Madelyn that she would date him much less consider marrying him. Time travel didn't come in until after page 200, and even then it wasn't a fun 'fish out of water' experience, but more like a scene out of Deliverance. The heroine cried through the book, but you can hardly blame her I suppose since she was pretty well tortured most of the time. I didn't care much for her. I liked Patrick most of the time, but that wasn't enough to salvage this book. I liked a previous Kurland book so I was willing to spend 8.99 for a good book. That is pretty expensive for an ebook and it turned out to be a big disappointment. I've had better luck with unknown writers at 2.99. I don't think I'll gamble on another Kurland book unless I get it from the library.

I have enjoyed each and every book I've read by his author. I like the time travels series especially. The stories are family centered, just because a story ends, it is not the end of a character, they continue to reappear as the stories progress to other family members. I enjoy the peek back into another time and the characters responses to past or present lifestyles. I like what the author projects: family support, honor, loyalty while giving the characters evil to defend against thus creating a story beyond the typical romance. The added touch of humor is a much appreciated bonus.

This book was my introduction to Lynn Kurland's wonderful McLeod family and I haven't missed one yet. I have them all in paperback ... in fact I have loaned them out and then had to repurchase because they never made it back to me. Now I am going through and buying them all for my Nook. Can't wait for her next one in April.
