Introduction

Introduction
Were you to cast your eyes over the assorted paraphernalia scattered across the half acre 'plot' we acquired with our farmhouse just over two years ago, who could blame you for wondering why we of all people had embarked on a book entitled Garden Ornaments.
Rusty corrugated iron carbuncles are now so familiar that we have to admit we do not even notice them. Disused and crumbling pig pens; a pile of broken concrete, discarded drain pipes, scattered building stone and an old cracked and chipped porcelain sink, are but a few of our numerous garden 'ornaments'. Perhaps the one redeeming feature of our garden, apart from the uninterrupted views and the fantastic sunsets, is an ancient stone-lined and rather lovely fresh water well which probably predates the present house. From the time spent thinking and developing the ideas for this book, a very practical blueprint plan for our garden has emerged, a design that is flexible, fun, sometimes flamboyant, formal in part and most importantly, relatively inexpensive to construct and easy to maintain. This plan, in turn, underlies the concepts behind the projects we have selected for the book.
However, this book is not strictly about gardens or gardening, it is about garden ornaments; the furnishings that will complement your outdoor space and, of course, your home, so that the indoor living area and outdoor space merge into one another to fit in with today's casual sophistication and easy relaxed life style. The excess of magazines and books on homes and gardens, as well as television programs on home and garden improvement, reflects the explosion of creative ideas in these areas.
The aim of this book is tostimulate thoughts and ideas about using your outdoor space as a natural extension of the home, and to provide examples of garden art, accessories, furnishings or ornaments, whatever you like to call them, that can be made inexpensively, using tools and materials you may already have, or are easily available. There are over 30 different projects that are grouped together in themed chapters - Seating and Eating, Wind and Weather, Birds and Wildlife, Creative Containers, and Inspirational Ideas. The projects are suitable for all levels of ability, whether you are a keen novice or have some previous experience in making decorative items for the home or garden and know the satisfaction of having created something with your own hands.
